Cartell

First time poster in the motors form and was just wondering if anyone has experienced this. My friend is selling her car and we arranged to meet a potential buyer who had two mechanics check the car and give the body a thorough going over. I wasn't sure why they were so concerned with the body. Anyway to cut a long story short the buyer informed us that he had paid €40 for cartell check.
The check had shown up that the car had not been taxed for an 8 month period hence he was suspicious of it. He gave us the dates the car had supposedly been out of tax. The first 2 months coincided with when the car was for sale from June to July 2013. The car was then taxed from August to now and we rang the department of transport to confirm this.
Here is the problem. The cartell report stated that the car was not taxed during a period of 8 months from June 2013 to January 2014. When we heard this we weren't too happy and rang cartell. The lady who answered agreed the car had no tax for just 2 months but that this 8 month period was used. We challenged her about why a period of 8 months and not the actual truth but she could not answer. Best she could do was say that this was the period and the car was not taxed for some length of time during this!!!
Needless to say any potential buyers see these 8 months and think the worst. The cartell lady wouldn't change it and just told us to email them and needless to say there has been no reply.
Has anyone else experienced this is there anything that can be done? To me it seems like they have manufactured results to satisfy the customer who has paid his money and we are left with untrue facts about a car. Thanks

Strange one, did a change of ownership occur when it was then retaxed, not sure if that would have put something out of sync on the system to report it incorrectly 8 months.

Have you got the old tax discs? I usually keep mine, helps in cases like this should there be any query.

I wouldn't take anything one of those reports says as gospel. A good indication, yes, but not gospel.

One of those type of sites even asked on here for information on a stolen car so that they could add it to a register. Didn't answer any questions regarding validating the information given mind.

The fact that something wasn't taxed for a period of time wouldn't bother me.

More interested in the actual car and it's condition than a piece of paper that should have been in the window.

Ya there was a change of ownership in July and then it was taxed from the August 2013 to now. Confirmed this by ringing the department of transport. They couldn't give info prior to my friends ownership but cartell had it that it wasn't taxed the June and July but give this 8 month period for no logical reason. Just annoyed how people pay for this and it gives inaccurate info to them and harms our chances of a sale. How many people check the car, see this and then don't bother to look at it.
    Thanks for the replies.
