At the age of 88. May he rest in peace.

Probably long before the time of many here but a truly genuine lovely man.

One of the Deises most famous sons. RIP

Always had a knowing appreciation of his public persona and was the perfect Sunday evening host. Its typical that he had to find his fame in Britain with the BBC and not on RTE. Even had series on American telly.

Val Doonican Rocks, But Gently one of the great album titles

Only Val could get away with singing about bestiality :P

Mrs. Burke to her daughter said: "Listen Mary Ann, who is the lad you were cuddlin' in the lane, he had long wiry whiskers hangin' from his chin?" "Twas only Pat McGinty's goat," she answered with a grin, then she went away from the village in disgrace.

    RIP.

I remember him being on the telly a lot when I was a kid, always crooning away and telling stories.

    RIP

Had an EP of his called Doonican's Irish Stew - 1968, if I remember rightly.
Listened to "Elusive Butterfly" for the first time on a miserable school trip to Wales - haunting.
"Walk Tall" on Top of the Pops - in black and white!
And my favourite of his - "Ring of Bright Water" from the film of the same name. Had just read the book and saw the film and the song was perfect.
Bringing back memories now - really sad.

So sad:(. I remember him being on the telly a lot when I was a child. He used to sing a song called Katie, and my late Dad used to sing it to me when I was small. I have a lovely photo of the two of them chatting when Val Doonican was in town a good few years back
