I have very nearly decided that I will change from my current 08 passat to a new 2.0tdi highline .More than likely it will be a black saloon with cream interior.

The only thing putting me off is that it is not massively different to my current passat .I don't like the mondeo or insignia and want to stay away from peugeot and Citroen.I test drove the Avensis but it feels a lot cheaper than the passat.

Does anyone have any suggestions of any other cars in similar range to look at or any comments on the current passat?

It's completely different when you take a proper look. Sure it's an evolution of the old one in many ways, but don't let having the old one out you off the new one. Have a look at the new Skoda superb too.

New Mazda 6 is nice or if your not a brand snob the new skoda Superb will be released in a few days and it is a Serious machine . totally blows the passat out of the water if you spec it up . More Spacious . better looking . more comfortable

This will give you an idea

A B6 Passat and B8 Passat are like chawk and cheese, totally different cars from the ground up. You need to look at one closer OP.

The new superb is a fantastic machine tbh. The first skoda that doesn't appear to have been deliberately made ugly.
    Should sell like hot cakes.

It doesn't blow the new Passat out of the water. It's no cheaper, uglier and hasn't as good an interior.
This B8 Passat is the first one to set the bar at a new level since the B5 one in 1997. 2 litre Highline with a DSG is an excellent car. All you get with the Superb is more leg room in the rear. In every other way the Passat is better.
That wasn't the case with the old one, but it is this time around.
Boards is a Skoda fan club though, so they'll all disagree. Test drive both! And look at the prices, the Superb is no longer a cheap car, and all the reviews have stated that Skoda this time had to under-do the interior a little so as not to steal Passat sales.
If you want a good handling car, get the Mazda 6. If you want a very comfortable and refined car, get the Passat. It renders the 4 cylinder A4s pointless.

    Superb as mentioned above.
    Jag Xe 2.0 diesel?

I have jumped ship from Octavia vRS to a new highline Passat as you were looking at, I find the passat a much nicer car to drive.

Again I went for St.Tropez Leather but changed my mind and went for black nappa instead as I was fearful of dye transfer.

Beauty is in the eye of beholder and that but that Passat is probably the dullest looking new car on the road. It's coma inducing stuff. The Superb is for once actually nice. I'm guessing the standard spec will be better and Skoda seem to be the only VAG brand that seems well screwed together.

With what they are throwing into the Passat in terms of free packages there's little if any difference between them in terms of spec. A lot of the Skoda reports are satisfaction surveys - it seems the dealers handle things a lot better than other makes and at a lower cost too. Would certainly be my experience with a previous Skoda.

In the right colour and wheel Combo the new Passat can look decent, but it wasn't designed to be noticed. They deliberately go for understated.

There is nothing in the new Passat that would tempt my out of my B7 Passat, interior is a sideways step and the exterior is awkward and the car looks small. The B7 has heft and is a more handsome car IMO. Superb and Mazda6 would hold more appeal.

Mazda 6 looks like a cruise liner on a small trailor.
I cannot understand huge bodies on cars and the wheels lost in under them.

    ** Rant over ** :D

I disagree. I think the Superb, while it looks better than the last one (wouldn't be hard), it's still terrible from the back, and the vertical grille is still crap. The Czech's aren't known for their styling! German stuff isn't ever going to be Italian-like in flair, but the B8 Passat fixes the wrongs with the B7 styling.
As far as screwed together, you're dreaming if you think there's a difference in the tooling between the brands.

Being well familiar with both, the difference is huge. The biggest mistake in the new one is they didn't change the boot enough. But in every way it's a much better car and better looking, with a much better interior. It's a large step up.

That's thanks to everyone buying the basic spec. Passats on the 17" make the wheels look small, let alone the standard 16's.

Once again I would disagree, the interior is not a big step at all. The new Comforline interior is inferior to the old Comfortline as it misses a lot of chrome and trim embellishments, even the seat fabric feels cheaper. The Highline interior is better, but so it should be.

Maybe the trim in the Comfortline is more sparce, but the design and quality is a good step ahead. The quality feel of the B7 is short of even the Mk7 Golf. The B8 in Highline is a match for the outgoing A4.

I agree, that is why I went ofr 18's on my Passat, But I still think the 6 looks way too big over the wheels.

You say Skoda had to under do the interior a little so as not to steal sales from the Passat. Your nearly right. VW made sure that Skoda did not make there interior as high quality as in there Passat because they are afraid that Skoda will steal sales from them. The same with the new Octavia and Fabia. Tis of course does not mean that Skoda interiors are bad and low in quality because they are not they are just a little behind the equivelent VW thats all. I think the new Superb is much nicer than the new Pasat myself with a nicer interior too.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

the passat is a fine car dont get me wrong but its boring looking and dull to drive , smaller than the superb and has nothing over it only the VW badge and some of the upcoming tech in the superb is beyond that of the passat . (which i cant understand TBH why vw dont have them in the passat)

BTW im not a skoda fan boy .Have driven them but never owned one . i drive a BMW . i just feel the skoda is the Superior car

I didn't say the Skoda had a poor interior. But the fact remains that the Passat has a slightly better quality interior.
I don't think any Skoda is really a good looking car to be honest, I'm certainly not typically a VW fan either.

Boring looking it might be, everything is these days, you've to go to Italy for some flair, or even France. Skoda's are all dull, and some have been downright ugly. New Octavia is kak looking.
You can't criticise the Passat for being dull to drive then go on to recommend an identically chassis'd Skoda!! They're almost the same car!!
The new Superb isn't a superior car. It's so close in price it's hard to measure as the spec's differ, and there's no tech on the Superb that you can't get on the Passat.
The mk 2 Superb was a better car than the B7 Passat, better value and better interior. But the B8 Passat is ahead. If it had a BMW badge folk would be praising it heavily on these forums.

I met a German registered Passat Estate yesterday. I must say it looked fantastic, it really caught my eye. It was very highly spec'd, obvious it wasn't an Irish car - big wheels, LED headlights, etc. Big road presence.

I think when people say it looks boring, its because 90% of Irish buyers will buy the mid range spec with the standard wheels and halogen lights, so the car has a fairly staid image here. Whereas many typical Audi A6 buyers for example, will go for S-line spec, big wheels, etc...

It is surely I actually met him a few times, he is on Twitter and Instagram too.

Op I was in same situation but would have loved the Superb I even Ordered a new Passat and turned my arse to it at the point of delivery as I didn't like it in the flesh, anyway wife wouldn't wait for a Superb so we ended up with a A4 but they are only average. .
