VW Golf mk4 TDi turbo whistle

I drove a mk4 VW Golf TDi which I am contemplating getting instead of my GTi. It was grand, the only thing I noticed was that the turbo was a lot louder in the TDi, especially when accelerating , not so much at lower revs. The car drove grand and there was no smoke of any colour from the exhaust. It passed the NCT only 5 weeks/ 300 miles ago.

Is there a chance the turbo could be going on it? Could a car with a blowing turbo pass the NCT? If it's not the turbo blowing then what could the whistling sound be, I've heard that they are just lounder on TDi's?

I am a lover of sound; I have had my MKIV TDI for over 5 years now and I have always enjoyed listening to the turbo whistle bounce of road side walls when driving around. Especially with the good weather. I be cruizin!!

No turbo issues on my car at all and I would say it is an easily noticeable sound if you were listening out for it.

If there was a boost leak, you would probably hit performance issues, limp mode and I would guess some smoke on acceleration.

Thanks for that. Have you ever had any problems starting it in the morning? My one is taking three turns of the ignition to get started, but it runs well enough then.

Three engine turns or three separate attempts at turning the key?

Mine is the former. It is something I never chased up as a mechanic told me about a problem (dynamic pump timing iirc) which is minor but could well have caused that issue so it went on the long finger for ages. The timing is now fixed, but I will have to wait till the Winter to know. If it comes back, then I'd say it is the preheat. I have no issues in the Summer.

Three engine turns, like yours. Except mine just happened yesterday morning in the middle of the summer! The car was lying up for a few months and is only back getting daily use now, I don't know whether that would effect it or not...

Could very well be the car laying up for a few months. I would look into renewing the fuel filter at the next service.

There are more experienced people on the board who could give some more tips.

When I had my car off the road for a few months, I got a bottle of Dipetane and ran that through the system over the course of a few full fills of diesel.

Come to think of it, it has been fairly cold at night at times recently. There was one morning start where I was surprised that the car took a couple of seconds more than normal to start. I immediately realised that I just turned the key instantly without leaving it on the preheat while I get my belt sorted (habit).
