Want to put this in AH for maximum visibility

Just got a call from 1800 7118822. Girl with an Indian accent said she was from the credit card centre in Sandyford & they were upgrading services on users cards, my card began with a 4 for visa & 5 for mastercard for verification, could I please confirm the remaining digest to establish she was speaking to (myname).

Obviously spotted it was a scam & hung up. Tried calling the number back & surprise it's not working.

I'm not with AIB (Sandyford) & my number is ex directory & my bank doesn't have the landline because we never use it, but she did get my name right which concerns me slightly.

Just a warning for those out there, let your parents etc know that it's going on, they've obviously moved on from "something wrong with your PC"

    Oh, it's not a swindle.
What you do is, see you give them all your credit card numbers and if one of them is lucky, they'll send you a prize.

I have had a similar call a few weeks ago. I played them along asking them several times during the call to hold on while I take another call as this is my work phone. They get very frustrated when the numbers don't verify on whatever sort of System they have access to, in the end up the guy asked me to verify the card type and when I told him it was a Topaz fuel card he hung up on me.

Credit cards and debit cards with a bank all have the same first six numbers I think so they'll usually have that sort of info.

The first 6 for Visa and MC are identifiers for the issuing institution and type of card.

The trick is to keep them on the phone as long as possible, love winding them up.

Its easy to verify the card number because the last digit is a check digit. You do a bit of maths on the preceding numbers and that gives you the check digit. If you make up a number then there's a one in ten chance the check digit will be wrong.

Edit> You can always feed them a real fake code from http://www.getcreditcardnumbers.com/ link includes info on how you can check for a correctly formed card number. afaik its possible to generate a real number but you wouldn't have a valid username to go with it or the code off the back of the card.
