GPS Watch would be a nice prize for a golfer

Genuine question OP, is that what the majority of winners want? I've won plenty of practical prizes. I just wish I got a trophy or the likes more of the time. Nice to have something to display at home, especially for something like the Captain's Prize.

A good compromise is something like a monthly medal, usually about €80 and a golf prize say a wedge. Best of both worlds?

Hmmm, that reminds me I must sort out the Boards.ie Golf Society Captains prize. If I manage to get what I have in mind, it will be neither of the above. Can't be giving anything away though :D

Been in this situation a few times in societies, honestly at this stage most golfers have all the gear they want, perpetual trophy and a one4all card is what folk want, our society outing prizes are now restaurant vouchers, fuel vouchers and one4all vouchers and we ask guys which they'd like just before the prize giving.

Can't go wrong with a golf cartbag, with your budget Callaway or Srixon would be ideal although if you shop around you might get a Titleist.
Defintely stay clear of dated crystal or mini trophys, they look awful and just end up being used as dust magnets.

How about 'practical' crystal or ceramics - like a vase, tumblers, a bowl etc. Nothing like returning home bearing the spoils of victory! Plus it can be put on display and actually used - I'd agree an out-and-out trophy is just a dust magnet!

my favourite prizes I've got over the years are:
.....piece of polished bog oak (from some they found when digging out part of the course)
.....an engraved silver hip flask (nice to throw in the bag for those winter friendly outings)
.....a Waterford crystal vase with the date of the competition engraved on it
    .....a walnut wood bowl

Any craftspeople local to the course you get something from - it would be both local and relevant.

    hi
yeah i think most people actually want something def from the usual crystal
the winner will get a small golf trophy aswell to mark the occasion, its the main prize that i am hoping to get that will actually be used instead of been stuck in a press somewhere

Whatever you get just don't get a mirror.

There was a captain of a society I'm a member of and he's a glazier. He decided to make a mirror for the winner of his captains day and put and his name and details right there in the middle of it.

He still gets a friendly slagging over it and it being so bad.

Maybe you could get a nice cart bag and see if you can get the front pocket embroidered with captains prize winner 2015 or something similar. Useful but still a nice prize to remember the day. And every time u loose a ball into oob at least when you go fishing for a new one in the bag you can remind yourself you were good enough to win a captains prize so this ball is going straight down middle of fairway :)

Only one problem with that is that you remove the option of exchanging the embroidered item.
