Let Go from Job with Immediate Effect

    Hi All,

Living in a house share and the lady living with us has been let go from her job in a Montessori with immediate effect, she spoke with me last night and said she will have to move out and back to her sisters as she has been let go from her job, she is very distressed as a few weeks ago they guaranteed her job would be ok over the summer has they would be holding summer camps in July and August.

She went to work on Monday and they told her that they no longer need her and to go home but they hope to have a job for her in September (no guarantees), they have messed her around with pay etc... not allowing her to sign register / timesheet for first few weeks until she voiced her concerns etc

I have told her to go to the Social Welfare office today to sign on while she looks for a new job, she has sent her CV to a few places already so hopefully she will get something.

She is not from Ireland but English is quite good, I have text her with a few jobs I saw online but she has just text back that they have arranged a meeting for her on the 16th July, is she not able to claim dole immediately considering she has been let go with no prior notice, I am just wondering what the meeting is for, I am in work so wont be speaking with her properly until I am home.

I am unsure of dealing with social welfare on anything like this, any advice much appreciated as I would like to help her out.

    Thanks

When I read the first paragraph, I was sure you'd be asking about how to get her to keep paying rent, would you have to return her deposit, etc.

Pleasantly surprised when I read on. I don't have any useful advice for you, but fair play to you. You sound like a good friend to her.

Is she an EU citizen and has the employer being paying her PRSI contributions?

Has she been given a P45?

She should go in to Welfare and lodge a claim immediately anyway.

Not sure about the deposit something we will have to discuss but I was hoping that we could come to some agreement as I know she doesnt want to go to her sisters as its a bit out of the way.

Well she is not in her home country and if I was in her position I would aprreciated the help, as they say costs nothing to be nice, hopefully she will find something soon.

Yes she has been paying her PRSI contributions, they just were not paying her for her correct hours at the start until she noticed and asked them about it.

She has gone to the Welfare today and got a date of 16th to go back.

I am not sure if she has been given her P45 yet.

    Ahh, that's what you meant.

It takes welfare a while to get started, they will do the paperwork properly on the 16th and backdate her claim to today.

In the meantime, she can visit the Community Welfare Office to see if she can get supplementary payments til the real ones start.

And she should be hassling the employer for the P45 and letter saying they have no more work for her, because Welfare will be easier with those in order.

Yes, I was talking to her this evening and she said the 16 is when she will have the meeting with welfare.
I told her she will need to get her P45 but she was like ill be going back in September, I then explained that without if she will not be able to get another job without it etc. Gas thing is I had text her earlier today to tell her to get a headed letter stating they have let her go immediately etc and she comes home this evening saying they asked her to stay to help out for a few hours today... ..
Shes not happy with the way they are treating and very confused with the whole situation.
We will see how things go from here, have printed off few jobs I saw today so shes gonna head to Internet Cafe to apply for a few more jobs tomorrow.

If her work really intends to employ her again in September, they will give her a letter to present to social welfare explaining that she has been laid off for the Summer Months due to lack of work. There is also a form that social welfare can get her employer to stamp so she can claim while she is laid off

I strongly advise anyone thinking of going into this industry to keep away from this area of work. I know 3/4 people personally messed around in this industry and your treated like a piece of dirt. So this comes as no suprise.

Tell your friend to go on welfare and go into another industry this is the norm in childcare!
