    From Politico.

This was a long time coming, thankfully America finally has a president with the spine to go against right wing idiocy and end decades of pointless sanctions which amounted to collective punishment for the people of Cuba.
The United States and Cuba will announce on Wednesday that they will reopen embassies in one another’s capitals, a milestone in the two nations’ efforts to normalize diplomatic relations. [...]

The administration has already lifted some travel and trade restrictions and removed Cuba from the U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism. The decision has faced criticism from many Republicans in Congress, however, including presidential candidates Sens. Marco Rubio of Florida and Ted Cruz of Texas.

As I said on another thread this is Obama trying to find a legacy.

His foreign policy is a mess.
Obamacare is not the universal success he hoped for.
    He is a lame duck.
    So he needs something else

What is Cuba doing in return for all the US is doing ?

Nothing as far as I can see.

Hopefully it will be all rolled back if a Republican presidential candidate wins.

Why would you want the normalisation of diplomatic relations with one of your neighbours to be rolled back? That's incredibly backward.

The neighbour is a dictator, and has been for over 50 years.

Since Obana initiated this thawing of relations with Cuba the Cuban administration has not done a thing, Cubans are no freere today than they were pre this US initiative.

The US should be waiting till the Castros die and then looking at influencing change rather than pandering to them

Ah because the US has historically done such a good job influencing it's neighbours.

    Bizarre isnt it?

These are the same people vowing to repeal the "Affordable Care Act" in the general election next year

Thats going to go down great with the voters isnt it? They're so out of touch they could be in some other country.

If you think the "Affordable Care Act" is going to work in the democrats' favour then you're the one out of touch. The republicans have banged that drum the last 3 elections and it's gone down perfectly well with the voters.

On this matter, great to hear that relationships are opening up between the two countries. The US treatment of Cuba has been very poor for the past while. If relations between the two countries further improve this is the sort of thing that will give Obama a very positive image in the history books.

The republicans used hysterical fear mongering about what the effects of the ACA would be.

    Those havent come to pass.

Maybe they can pull if off again, maybe they cant.

    ;)

Shouldn't the U.S be supporting him then?

Wrong sort of dictator. The US only supports right wing military dictatorships with a penchant for bouts of genocide and ethnic cleansing.

Augusto Pinochet = good, Castro = bad is a good working model.
