My sister is only recently back from Australia after spending years over there. Her Irish licence has expired. She has a full Australian licence.

We thought it was only a matter of converting the Aussie licence over to and Irish one but this wasn't the case.... she has to do the theory test, and full test again over here simple because the Australian licence was sat in and automatic car. Has anyone any info on this, can't find any anywhere.

I expect the Australian one can be converted to an automatic Irish licence, the test would arise if you wished to get a manual licence.

If you pass your test in an automatic car, you can only apply for a full driving licence to drive an automatic car. If you later want to apply for a full driving licence for a manual car, you will have to pass a test in a manual vehicle before applying for a full licence to drive it.

How many years? More of less than ten? If more, see below. If less than ten years, fill in a "lost license" form, pay the €35, and continue on.

She could probably get an automatic one here?

You can renew if your licence expired less than 10 years.

Is it possible she exchanged her licence when she went over and just forgot? Or did she do the test over there?

Different regions within Australia give different exchange entitlements for transmissions and trailers etc. AFAIK there are no regions that don't exchange with Ireland (for example we only exchange with some regions of Canada).

She won't have lost her Irish entitlements until 10 years after the licence expires- a 20 year window really.

The best thing is to pick up the phone and call the NDLS. They will tell her what her situation is with her Irish entitlements and what she get if exchanging from her region in Australia.

Probably the worst case scenario is that she ends up exchanging her foreign licence for a full B with a 78 notation for automatic and she'll have to get a learner permit for B and resit the test in a manual car to remove the 78 in her own time.
