I will be home in Dublin for a few days,I plan on renting a car at the airport.
I got some quotes online but I'm not sure if it includes insurance or not,if it doesn't do I have to purchase insurance? Is it usually expensive, will be for about 10 days? Thanks

You'll get the bare minimum level of insurance and have a huge excess. Better off buying total cover either from the rental company, could be fairly expensive for 10 days but complete peace of mind, or from the the many companies who now offer car hire excess cover, cheaper than direct from the company but you'll need to claim it back after it's been taken from your CC.

How much does car rental cost per day on average? Was quoted 472€ for 6 days is this about right?

Depends on time of the year, I would think anything on 2nd half of December will be at a premium.

That's like asking how long is a piece of string. Size of car, time of year, availability, etc all have a factor in the cost.

    This is ludicrous pricing

I got a qashqai for 140euro for 7 days two weeks ago. Used rentalcars.com and sixt. Booked it a week in advance, sat nav leather, all extras. Did not take out any of their insurance. I have an annual policy as I rent a lot while travelling to the UK. I use carhirexcess.com it costs 65euro a year and covers your full excess anywhere in Europe.

My dad uses the same, I've never had a claim, but he hit a deer in Scotland. The car was written off. All covered by the insurance with the rental company and the excess was covered by the carhirexcess crowd( think it's blue insurance)

Sixt were trying to add on 240euro on top for their cover. Absolute madness.

Tip. Take photos of all parts of the car before you leave and don't be afraid to highlight any issues that they may have missed.

I find any of the companies in the airport decent and tend to get a brand New car or one with less than 10k kms. 20euro a day. Why pay more?

Taxis for short journeys, first class train travel for long.

Na, wouldn't have worked. He was going all over the place in very rural Ireland. Even if he could to it the other way it'd be a lot of hassle with all the kids gear etc.

He made a mistake re the insurance somehow. I'm sure there's much cheaper ways. I doubt he'll be doing that again.

Use Argoscarhire.com or rentalcars.com, leave it just a few days before you need the car and you should get focus's/mondeo's for roughly 100 per week, or 300 per month.

And using carhireexcess.com which is part of AIG to get insure excess for 1 year with 2 drivers for 50 yo-yo...so do not pay for the car hire company optional insurance.

The only snag so far is that it can be a bit expensive to add a second driver.

Edit to add: the above only works off-peak, so not Christmas.
