Need new Tyres, help!

    Was about to head out on a cycle this evening, checked the back wheels and the thread (actual fibres) is showing through them in patches in a few spots in the centre of the tyre.

    Only bought the bike 9 months ago (cheap and cheerful carrera road bike) but there's only about 1500k on them so thought I would get longer out of them. The front one still seems ok.

    So 2 questions:

    1) Is there anything I could be doing that would have caused the rear to so quickly? I checked them regular enough and kept them just over 100psi. Lucky enough that I never had a puncture with them.

    2) Any recommendations for new tyres? Originals tyres were slick, 23 x 700c. Would like something that gives a little extra insurance against punctures and ones that will be reliable enough in the wet and also hopefully give a lot more mileage than the first set.

    conti grandprix 4 seasons are almoat bullitproof and have stacks of grip

    conti gp 4000s II have even more grip, are faster and excellent protection

    28c are faster than 23c according to tour magazine

    25c are almost as fast if your frame cant take 28c tyrea

    Most tyres on new bikes are poor, they dont car about disposable items

    You'll not go far wrong with Michelin Pro4 service course tyres. Excellent puncture resistance, low rolling resistance and they wear very well. There's a V2 out now which is supposed to be a faster tyre but I haven't tried them yet, they'll be my next purchase but the original PRO4 SC is an excellent all round tyre.

    As it's only on the rear, and only in patches, have you have been skidding on them?

    Thanks for all the advice guys, with regard to the last post I haven't been skidding so don't think it's that. Just found it strange that the back one seemed to wear all of a sudden with the patches appearing in 3 separate places on the tyre and pretty sure must have just happened on my last cycle as they are big enough that I would have have spotted them before and front one still seems fine.

    I'm leaning towards getting a 25mm in the Schwalbe Luganos that wpd suggested based purely on price (less than half the price of the others looking on chainreaction). I just use the bike for getting out and clocking up enough milage to keep fit so weight / performance of the tyre not a major issue other than looking for something that will be relatively puncture resistant and with decent enough grip on a rainy day.

    Swear by Conti GP 4000 2s. Predictable in the wet, and grippy in the dry. No hassles with puntures either, though I'd be on the lighter side myself.

    After a wrath of punctures on Maxxis Detonators last year I followed the advice of the forum and went for Conti Gatorskins and haven't looked back (I'll probably get a puncture this evening after saying that).

    They've been a really good tyre, used daily (minimum 30-40k per day), are hardly showing signs of wear and not one puncture.

    GP 4 season are fine for grip, at 90/100ish psi in 25mm, but at €40 or so I fine the sidewalls are too fragile, if you want a long lasting tyre. I've had 2 sidewall failures in last 12 months.

    Puncture protection is fine.

    I've been victim of a slow speed fall using gatorskins and my co rider suffer one at circa 15km two weeks ago. Wouldn't use again.

    IMO if you can take the weight penalty, durano plus are hard to beat for durability, puncture protection, grip. They are usually got on German sites for 25ish.

    I puncture on them in last 12 months, a piece of glass

    GP4's on now for over 3 years. Never had a puncture on them thankfully, have put up maybe 4 sets and 10.000kms

    GP4's Too about 2.5k -3k per set no punctures except one on a metal plate covering road works

    I give the shards of glass names and check there still there every couple of hundred km
