So i just bought a car, from a dealer ( i think thats important in this scenario). I now need to tax it but i cant log onto the motor tax site.
It seems i have to register the car in my name first but there is no info ( that i can find) on how to do this.

Can anyone advise how i do this and if it can be done online, or if this will be done by the dealer?

Did the seller ask you to sign a change of ownership form?

It's their responsibility to submit that to get the car into your name so if it's been more than a few days since you got the car, maybe give them a bell asking if they sent in the form.

Is it new or used? If it's new, the dealer will register it with Revenue in your name and you can tax it online using the last 6 digits of the chassis number in place of the pin. You won't receive the actual registration cert until the car is taxed.

If it's used, the dealer or the person you bought it off should have had you sign the change of ownership section of the registration cert when you collected it, then sent that off the DoE for them to make the change. If they didn't do this, then you need to give them a ring.

Alot of big dealers can do the change of ownership process online instead of sending the log book off, but it still takes time for the system to update with your details.

Keep checking here if ownership changes :> https://www.motortax.ie/PSE/start.do;jsessionid=0aa0114830d8c5d25216c6504af5aa7ac58c364336f4.e38PaNaSbhuOay0MbxqLe0?page=welcome

Once it does then request a new PIN and tax the car.
