Maybe better to get a better brand of shorts , what shorts do you use?

Also some assos chamois cream might help.

going to get a bigger saddle I think

that cream- do you put it on before or after use ?

I think you need to give a bit more info. How long have you been cycling? What kind of bike and distances?

I have a pair of Lidl shorts for cycling to work (fine for this) but a better pair of bib shorts for longer trips.

A bigger saddle or a gel cover can come with their own problems, otherwise we'd all be riding springy chair seats. :)

have you tried playing with the angle of your saddle?

A bigger saddle will not help you, it'll probably only cause chaffing in other areas. What saddle is on your bike at present?

Id go with buying a better quality bib short. If you are putting up serious distances might aswell invest in something decent as its your ass on the line :)

Chamois cream is applied when putting your shorts on.

Lidl shorts aren't great, I found them very uncomfortable and tend to splash out on shorts as to me it's worth it (wear Specialized bibs myself, dhb are ok).

Do not get a bigger saddle, different saddle maybe.

    1. Your bike fit may be the problem. Don't go playing with the saddle angle until your fit is right.

    2. Buy some decent shorts. The lidl ones are useless for long spins.

Forget about chamois cream etc until you do the above.

Same scenario as Aidanki, need to get a good pair of bib shorts, doing ROK this weekend and last cycle was a right pain in the arse!! Not good! going for these "Altura Progel Bib Short " and pain killers. Are the shorts any good?

Altura Progel shorts are just fine - certainly a massive improvement over the Lidl/Aldi ones. I used them all last year up to and including my longest day in the saddle (W200). If you're prepared to pay more you can get better but for €50-60 they're the best value I've come across.

Thanks Lissard, what would you recommend and what would the price difference be roughly?

thats a gamble, buying new shorts just before the ROK,I appreciate that you have to or your tradesmans will hanging off you in ribbons. Your looking at 7-10 hours in the saddle, a general rule of thumb is to ensure your choice of clothing is not going to annoy/chaff/rub or generally get on your thruppenny bits!

Some people find less padding works better than more. You only know by trial and error. The first thing to make sure is that you are fitted to the bike properly so your weight is carried on your sit bones, and that the saddle fits too, so you dont roll off the sides. Saddle height, reach to the bars, even the crank length can affect how comfortable you are on the bike.

But at its simplest, ditch the cheap shorts. I have actual scars (where you dont want scars!) from Aldi/Lidl cheap cycle shorts. Go to a proper bike shop, that does branded gear, try some on, and buy a good pair. Do not wear underwear underneath cycle shorts.

made the underwear mistake too!! so im going for better shorts and cream approach, possibly a risk but I know the other shorts dont give the required padding so....

    Santini are a good brand.
prendas.co.uk have a variety, but probably do not stock all sizes.

I find the lidl bib shorts to be grand, padding is not quite as comfortable as my altura shorts but not a big difference. My altura are not bib shorts so i tend to opt for the lidl ones mostly now and leave the altura in the press.

100km after only being back on the bike a few months would make anyone sore though.

Padded inserts would be counterproductive - they would just move around and chafe.

Here's a good review of some of the brands out there, UK based and all north of €100.

    http://www.bikeradar.com/road/gear/article/best-bib-shorts-group-review-44382/

The best shorts I have are Spin11 club bibs. Looking the the label it looks like Spin11 resell an Italian brand called Alé.

    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/ale-exclusive-prr-bermuda-bib-shorts/

The club bibs were quite a bit cheaper that the branded stuff (€60 vs €125) however I noticed recently that some bike shops are now stocking Spin11 clothing. If you're in Dublin Hollingsworth cycles have them. Have a look at the Spin11 facebook page to get an idea of which shops stock them. They are spread all over the country.

They sell Altura and Gore which are reputable brands and much better quality than Akdi/Lidl clothing.

I use dhb bib shorts myself and find them grand for 100k +. I used to suffer from sore/numb nether regions but my "cure" was
    1. Get a proper bike fit
    2. Get decent shorts
    3. Learn to get out of the saddle and pedal standing up for about 30-60 seconds every 10-15 minutes to get blood flowing down below again. Do it on hills or even small inclines and you'll literally feel the blood flowing again and taking away numbness and pain.

    Worked for me!

Just back from 50km on Aldi shorts. Compared to astro shorts + underwear, they made the world a difference.

Will probably invest in another 2-3 pairs.
