I'll be turning 17 in a few months and plan on buying a car. I have a budget of about 1000€-1300€ for the car and my grandmother will pay my insurance to a max of close to 2000€.

I was wondering which car would be best to buy in terms of insurance price/quality/reliability. I will have a provisional license. If possible I'd like to get insured for less than €2000

Something small engined, which insurance companies should see as a low risk, therefore a lower premium. Stick around 1.0 engines, micras, fiestas etc. A yaris would be an ideal car, but due to their popularity they tend to hold their value, you may struggle to find one in your budget. Like I said, as a general rule of thumb, small engine cars, and you can't go too far wrong.

Are you ready for the test? If so that should be your main focus. Do you really need a car? Try getting named experience for a few years first maybe?

I was looking at fiestas alright.... What about a 1 litre starlet? Would it be possible to get a 1.4, maybe a golf? or would that be a ridiculous price to insure?

Do some online quotes to get an idea. Grab a car off DoneDeal and use that as a test car.

What price did you get online?

Yes I've been practising for the theory for ages and I'm very confident. See I want a car because I live in a rural area and I want to get a job so I would need my own means of transport. I'm also in the red cross and my mother is getting sick of constantly driving me 30 km to training and stuff.

You know that you can't drive unaccompanied until you pass your test, don't you?

Remember that you will need to have a qualified driver with you, while you are a learner. I know that the gardai didn't enforce this too stringently in the past, but they really are clamping down on unaccompanied learners. Practise and get your test done asap, and then you can drive where you wish!

Sorry to tell you but your aul doll will still have to accompany you, you can't drive unaccompanied on a provisional

How much is the fine if your caught without a qualified driver these days?

Two points, 80 fine and they won't let you drive away until you are accompanied..

Is it possible that I would get insured on something bigger than a one litre for 2000 or less?

It's possible alright, but you won't know for sure until you ring up all the insurance companies. No two people are the same, factors differ, so no one here can give you a set price. Take out the phone book, find every company and broker you can and get as many quotes as you can, going with the cheapest. Phoning them directly will usually secure you a better price, as opposed to quotes online, which more often then not are plucked out of the air!

Referring back to the question you asked, yes, it will be quite difficult to get insured on a golf, regardless of the engine that's in it. They are a red zone with insurance companies unfortunately.

It all depends if you are the main driver or just named but either way id say you will struggle to get insurance for under 2 grand.
My first insurance as a 21 year old on a 1 litre under my own name with 2 years experience on another policy was over 3 grand. and insurance is going up in the last year
