I am thinking of planing phyllostachys aurea in an border about 40cm wide with a wall on one side and we will be getting synthetic grass installed right up to it at the other side (there will be about 5cm of hardcore + 3cm of quarry dust). Do I have to put any between the bamboo and the grass to stop it damaging the synthetic grass?

Bamboo will go through that like a hot knife through butter.
Familiarize yourself with how bamboo grows before you think about planting it.
This nursery at least has the decency to give information to customers on how to plant it properly and control it.
