Total newbie to driving here so excuse my lack of knowledge.

I just bought a used 1.2 litre Polo which seems like an ideal starter car. It's in great condition and am happy with it apart from one thing.

It was advertised as having 2 keys, but the spare key doesn't seem to work. I'm probably doing something wrong so I'm just checking here before I report back to the seller. The key fits into the the door and ignition, but doesn't turn. To look at it, the cut does look slightly different. The grooves are very similar but not identical. It also doesn't have the VW logo so it was probably one that was cut.

Would this be a costly fix? Is it easy to get another spare if this one is a dud?

Does the second key lock/unlock the door?
If so it can be valet key.
    Does it unlock the boot?

Nope, it doesn't even do that much. Slots in but doesn't turn. Tried both passenger and driver side. Might it have just been a ploy to up the value of the car? Or just a cheap knock-off copy?

This is the moment when you get back to the seller and ask what the key is for :)

Is the key the same, ie when you put the 2 side by side are the grooves cut in them the same?
