How do I read my meter?

My meter is on the footpath and very hard to access, in addition I have no idea how to open it to ensure that I do not break it or damage the meter.

Other meters like electric/gas can easy be read because I can open the box and see the meter and the values.

Do you provide any instructions how to read the meter?

Do you possible provide an app for mobile devices that can read the meter?

As much as I agree with paying for what I consume, I really would like to ensure that I actually pay for what I used and not what my neighbor uses.

Thanks for your answer in advance.

    Hi Asgard,

    Thank you for your queries.
Do you provide any instructions how to read the meter?

If you would like to read your own water meter, please ensure that it is safe for you to do so. The meter box can be opened by carefully and safely prizing the lid off. You will see small slots on the edge of the meter box cover, into which you can insert a lever to prise open the cover. (Don’t use a sharp tool like a knife in case it slips; use a blunt sturdy lever). It is important that the meter lid should not be forced and should be replaced properly and shut firmly to ensure that the meter box remains water tight. Care should be taken to prevent damage to the seal.

It is important to make sure that the meter area is not left unattended while the lid is open and you are reading your meter, even for a few seconds. This is to prevent people falling in or tripping over the meter box and lid. The water meter contains a polystyrene pad (frost plug). This is provided to guard against frost damage and must be removed if you wish to examine the meter. This must be replaced when finished to protect the meter and connecting pipes.

Depending on the type of meter, there may be a small transparent plastic window covering the dials and keeping them clean: this is a hinged cover and can be flipped open very easily. The water meter should be visible in the bottom of the meter box and you should be able to clearly read the dials in daylight.

All Irish Water meters are metric meters, they measure water volume in cubic meters (1 cubic meter = 1,000 litres = approximately 220 gallons). Your bill will be charged in cubic meters so you do not need to read the numbers on the red display.
Do you possible provide an app for mobile devices that can read the meter?

We do not have a mobile app at this time.

I hope this helps. If you have any future queries, please don't hesitate to ask.

    Kind regards,
    Kim
