...are we just hearing about them more often these days?

Strikes me that not a week has gone by over the last few months without a headline along the lines of "Probe after <insert dangerous tropical spider breed> nest found in bananas from <insert large supermarket chain>". The most recent case in Dunnes Stores: http://www.irishmirror.ie/news/irish-news/horrified-mum-finds-giant-spider-5883662

In recent months I've seen similar articles relating to Tesco, Aldi, Spar, you name it - both here and in the UK.

What the f*ck is going on? Is there no such thing as quality control anymore?

Don't you mean dead spiders arriving from tropical countries, and Native spiders being found in stores here.

This scare mongering story raises it's head every summer. Nothing new. Far from it. Done over again many times here.

I am sick of all these stories about moars.

Could the spider tourists have anything to do with the bananas being packaged in plastic bags?

OP, if you are bald, get a tattoo of a spider on your head and you'll never be bothered by flies ;)

I once found a dead lizard while emptying a container of furniture that originated in Malaysia. From what I understand, the containers are fumigated before they are sealed. And on the off chance something crawls inside its extremely rare that anything would survive.Bear in mind I'm talking about flatpack furniture, clearly not intended for human consumption :D
I'm not sure if they fumigate containers used for foodstuffs.

Media coverage does not equal prevalence.

I cringe every time I open a thread on here and the OP has linked an article from some tabloid rag. Everything they report is nonsense and best avoided.

Most Spider found in stuff here are from Ireland. The papers know it well by now but instead just repeat the hysterics of someone who doesn't have a clue what they're talking about. It happened years ago where I work, the local paper came in and took pictures, they started saying it's a black widow (not even native to the country the package came from) I showed them picture of the small black window which looked nothing like the big spider we caught. Of course the next day in the paper the story was about a black widow. The spider turned out to be a particularly big Irish spider.

well our tastes have grown more exotic, so the more we insist on out of season fruits and veg available all year round and exotic consumables from far fling corners of the world the more likely we are to get invasive species. What's worrying is that climate change is making some of them more likely to thrive here.
It's not a new phenomenon though, dun laoghaire pier has been riddled with little scorpions for years. Really.
