    Chapplefolk of the Forum-shire.

Does anyone fairly central Dublin based have a Campagnolo chain tool (10spd) that I could borrow/use on site to fit a new chain?

Is this a splitting tool you are talking about? I have a splitting/fixing tool for a chain, I am not aware that there is different chain tools, if that is the case, you are welcome to borrow it.
I live in Drimnagh, and work based in Phibsboro as a bus driver which brings me to City centre Dublin every day for my break.

It's like how do you know if someone has an iPhone?

    They tell you.

Campag needs a specific chain tool (annoying). I know for sure Beecycles has one but I am not sure if you can borrow it :)

I use Campag 10 speed chains, but I always KMC Missing Link (10C for Campag and 10 S for Shimano, they are different). I have been using them for years with no problems and its much easier (and less expensive) to remove the chain for cleaning.

Are you sure you need the Campag tool for 10spd? I've used a couple of regular chain tools on 9 spd Campag chains (One from Halfords and one that came with the Aldi tool box) without trouble.

Ah he said 10 speed, ignore me then :)

Any tool will work to break a 10 speed campy chain .... And most tools will split an 11speed..
Joining using campagnolo pins however is a different story
As mentioned above I'd recommend using quick links with ALL campy chains as even if you have the tool to "peen"the pin ... You may not have the skill!!!!!!
Quick links if changed every 1500k rarely cause problems...

Googling and the packaging on the chain have both said that you need a Campag specific chain tool...which is €200!

A split link won't help me shorten the chain.

@Wheelo01 might be easier for me to spin out to Drimnagh, I want to be able to cut links out of the chain to get the correct length. I'm assuming it's the same thing we're talking about?

It is something like this if it is any good to you, you can borrow it. What part of Dublin are you in?

The packaging is campags propaganda ...
Any tool will break the chain for you
Just buy a kmc/SRAM link and your then sorted

Concur with what "onthefringe" says - any decent tool will open the chain and I would also recommend a KMC quick link.

Yes, you can use any chaintool to break any chain. I wouldn't re-use the pin, or outer plates that pin joins (i.e. throw them in the bin), but the inner link that the pushed pin passed through should be fine as the tool shouldn't even come into contact with it. That assumes a chaintool of at least reasonably quality, poor quality chaintools are a pig to use and you might just as well hit the chain with a sledge hammer - a chaintool being rated for 10sp is not a guarantee of quality, but generally speaking they are built to better tolerances so should in theory be better quality than some.

For joining a 10sp chain I wouldn't do it without a 10sp chaintool, it's the joining step that poses most of the risk of damage to the chain or pin. Split links are fine too, of course, but personally I wouldn't use one unless it was clearly labelled as re-usable as it wouldn't offer me any advantages otherwise.

I have a Park Tool chaintool that is 10sp compatible if you'd like to borrow it. I'm based in the southside, loike, but I work in the city centre so could bring it in with me some day this week.

I've always used the chain breaker on my muti-tool and re-usable KMC split links with no issue. Currently running a 10sp centaur chain, was running a 10sp veloce chain previously.

    i've one of these

    https://www.google.ie/search?sourceid=chrome-psyapi2&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8&q=kmc%20chain%20breaker&oq=kmc%20chain%20breaker&aqs=chrome..69i57.3943j0j7

Does 4 different chain types - I think 8,9,10 & 11 speed. Worked fine on my campag 11speed chain, which I replaced with a KMC equivalent using their missing link. Just be aware - you need a special to to properly open / close the KMC link. It doesn't snap shut as easy as the shimano / SRAM ones.
