You seem to be all over the place there, a Mitsubishi Colt is a small supermini, a Megane is medium size and a Vectra is larger again. Other than they all cost €5k or less and diesel what criteria are you using for those 3 cars to be on your list? It will be tough enough trying to find a "reliable" diesel within your budget as there is alot of tired rubbish out there for sale and the cheapest examples of these tend to be junk or money pits.

I'd be looking towards a Skoda Octavia, practical in size, 1.9 TDi engine is solid, economical and plenty of them about. Just do proper background checks as they are popular as taxis so some tired clocked ones being passed off as privately owned.

Something like this if it is genuine:

Just one thing to note about that one is that ownership transferred back in April so the seller maybe a part time wheeler dealer.

Do you really need a diesel? Im kinda in the same situation as you - looking for a reliable and economical car. I think i've test drove nearly 10 diesel cars, and about 4 petrol cars and by far my favourite was the Toyota Corolla 1.4vvti. Great recommendations from everyone and I cannot find any faults with any of them that I test drove. Cheap to insure, cheap tax (€385 per year), and is apparently cheap to run with very low maintenance cost.

If you REALLY need a diesel, then you may be able to get the 1.4 D4D engine Corolla, but alot of them have high mileage (from what I can find!)

Yes I'm all over the place as I haven't a clue about cars except I keep hearing that Toyota cars are the best (but a wee bit on the boring side). As for your suggestions thanks so much. Only issue I have is the tax is very high. So now what I'm thinking is not to buy diesel on my low budget. I do drive 600 km per week but might just focus on a economical petrol 1.4-1.6 now instead. I'm interested in a saloon or a roomy hatchback (two kids). So what other links/suggestions would you have. Thanks again.

Thanks for your feedback on the Toyota Corolla. I have 2 kids so this might be a wee bit on the small side. There's a guy selling an 06 Avensis in Limerick for 4000 147km - decent condition and is petrol 1.6. I might look at this again. But was looking for another few ideas?
Need to get a car fairly soon.

The problem is that there are very few small engined good diesel cars within your budget. You will either need to increase your budget or accept the additional cost of tax. The best of the small diesel engines out there is probably the Toyota Corolla 1.4 D-4D but finding a good one for €5k will be difficult.

If you are happy to consider a petrol car then your budget will go further.

The Avensis is a good car just make sure that it has a full service record and history check. Do you really need a car that big do. How about something like a Ford C-Max.

Nice car. Easier to but in a take out child seats too as its not as low as a car like the Avensis.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

thanks for those replies and links.
Still thinking and debating what to get. Might go with a petrol car and might post a link or 2 in the next few days.
    Cheers again.
