Connecting trains

I'm shortly going to be travelling from Hazelhatch to Kilkenny. The journey planner shows Heuston as the connecting station for some of the trips. While not ideal I presume the fare is the same regardless of where I change?

Yes, the fare is the same.

Guy in Hazelhatch station was adamant I needed to pay an extra fare from Hazelhatch to Heuston and then use a Heuston to Kilkenny ticket for the 2nd leg as I was "travelling away from Kilkenny" if I was making the connection in Heuston. I explained the journey planner made the decision not me and if I had another option I'd use it.

Bought a ticket from the machine. RPU guy said on boars that I was OK, but that I really should have changed down the line and put up with the 3 hour wait.

It is often down to lads in stations not knowing the codes for stations off their patch.

Once you know the codes you can be issued a ticket from any station to any other station in Ireland.

He knew the codes, he had them in front of him, and had given me a total price.

Presume you were travelling on a Sunday? Mon - Sat there's an hourly service Hazelhatch - Newbridge & Kildare, so the maximum connectional time was is an hour.

My best was an online purchase - before the regular local service started - Heuston - Portlaoise return. Outward was fine, but for the evening return there was a three hour gap, but it was filled by offering me a trip to Thurles for an up Cork non-sto to Heuston. I purchased this - it saved me about an hour on my arrival time at Heuston, but made sure I took the printouts with me even though as an advance purchase it had seat reservations. The host on the Portlaosie - Thurles train was not happy, but had to accept it - the guy on the Thurles - Heuston was not in the slightest bit bothered!

I thought that the rule about travelling in the opposite direction to connect was that it was only allowed where a saving in time was possible. so if going to Heuston allows you to get an earlier train and arrive earlier at your destination then you are allowed to connect through Heuston.

The fare you should be charged (single) is 22.24, IE will give a refund once you tell them if you paid extra.

JP over rules everything. There is a daily Waterford service which connects with Heuston because it's non stop to Athy or there is no commuter service to Kildare.

Edit - on website Hazelhatch is excluded from IC routes because it's within the Short Hop zone so the station guy may have a point but I believe the JP overrules and the above fare is correct.
