Im obviously gonna ring and try get a better date, but what are the implications, if any, of not getting it tested til a month after it expires? Is it legal to drive it during that time?

Rather than ringing the NCTS, check after 11pm and before 8/9am as any cancellations seem to go through their system around 11pm. If you check after then you'll probably find an available appointment before your car's due date.

I had a similar problem, initially you couldn't make a booking more than three months from the current date but once I was within the three months the waiting list was over three months and I couldn't get an appointment before it was due. I checked a few times after 11pm and rescheduled my booking to well before the expiry date.

I don't know haw strict the enforcement is but it's a five penalty point offense now, I'd rather not chance having to try and talk my way out of it and if your car was ticketed while parked in a public place you mightn't be there to talk your way out of it.

Check the NCTS website late at night and you should find an open appointment slot before your current NCT cert expires.

Check just after 11:30PM to be exact. I was devastated recently when I couldn't get a test within 28 days, but was given a free test as compensation. Q, logging on at 11:30 the same night my freebie was confirmed and I got a test for two weeks later. Blagtastic.

/EDIT You can reschedule online without issue

isn't it a three point offence now by FPN rather than Court appearance?

Yep 3 points fixed charge (if you pay it). Easier to dish out than a court summons, imo.
