Anyone ever been there recently? How hard is it to get a visa, it seems like there's a lot of red tape?

I was there in 2012 for three weeks (Trans-Sib with stop-offs)

Found the Russian Embassy in Ireland very helpful. I overpaid by mistake - had the wrong visa category - and they rang me to let me know. I got a new postal order, but it didn't delay the visa.

You do need a letter of invite, but a travel company (I used RealRussia.co.uk) or a hotel can arrange this - it's a template. It's either a money-making scam ($25 or so) or just a way to dissuade migrant workers; not sure which!
