Should I buy 1st or 2nd gen Moto G?

I'm planning on buying the Moto G, but tbh I'm a bit confused by the differences between the versions. I'm either looking at the 4g 1st gen, or either the 3g or 4g of 2nd gen. There's about €50 difference between 1st and 2nd gen.

Is there any great advantage in buying the 2nd gen or should I save the 50 quid? I'd like a decent camera but I assume they're similar, and a micro sd slot, but other than that, I don't think there's any other feature I'd need to have for the price difference.

I'd buy something else to be honest. These are old phones now and not the bargains they use to be.

    poor advice there.

The G is a cracking phone and very highly regarded. 1 & 2 are Very similar phones (processor, camera, screen res, RAM)

    Notable differences:

Larger screen (though you might be happier with the 1st gen for size)
    Expandable storage
    An extra 8GB internal storage

    You decide :)

Hang on another while as the moto g 2015 3rd gen is on the way.

Thanks. I think I'd probably go with the first gen because of the price difference if there's little else between them. I had thought about waiting for the 3rd gen, but would be worried about the price it might be (looking for as cheap as possible at the moment).

I have had the first green for a year and a half now. It was replaced once because it had a faulty screen. But apart from that it's excellent. Battery still lasts almost 2 days.

It is also excellent if you like customizing roms etc. Running anything but lollipop should be fine. lollipop just gives problems with the older phones. Example, you world be lucky to get a day out of the battery, and it will be as laggy as hell.

My opinion..... I wouldn't recommended 2013 specifications in 2015. Old phone.

Thanks for the advice, I'll take a look at the Huawei and also at whatever else is out there!

2nd gen is a cracking phone and not even a year old yet. Runs buttery smooth and is great value at about 190 Euro. You will not get better at that price. I would recommend 2nd gen as it will continue to get Android updates for another year still.

Thanks. When you say it runs well, is that on KitKat or Lollipop? If it comes with KitKat, would you recommend leaving it as is, or upgrading it?

Have both the 2nd Gen moto G and the Huawei, both excellent value for money but I'd choose the Huawei every time. Even though it's on kit kat 4.4.4 I find it a much better phone. Haven't really noticed any of the lag the Huawei launcher is supposed to have, screen is decent and the battery is significantly better than any android I've ever owned.

My wife loves the 2nd Gen moto G though, so wouldn't have problem recommending either phone.

Not really. When mine broke (5" version, power button gave up) I picked up an old Galaxy S3 and it feels much better in almost every respect.

If the OP wants a decent camera, the Moto G won't do.

    +1

The Moto E & G's cameras are not very good at all.

@OP - were I in your shoes, and on Vodafone, I'd look at this: http://m.gsmarena.com/vodafone_smart_prime_6-7230.php

Had a play with one today, was pleasantly surprised at how good it is.

Must have the latest the minute its out.... Into the long queues to be the first. Can't be seen with last years phone.

What virtue is there in spending money today on a brand new Moto G if there are more up to date alternatives? No one is suggesting the abandonment of an already purchased Moto G.

Kitkat is a far better than lollipop in my opinion and that is for any phone. But Moto G 2nd gen runs smoothly on Lollipop
Also have 1st gen Moto G on Lollipop and its fine too but was better on Kitkat.

Depends who is buying. And price.

If prices are more or less equal, I'm not sure why one wouldn't go for the more up to date device, unless there's a significant issue with OS optimisation.
