Hi All, I was wondering if anybody could help me. I've finished my 4 year course in NUIG and I have started working for a diagnostics company. One of the guys that started with me was in the same situation and he was told by revenue in Mayo that he won't be paying any PAYE until he graduates from college because he is still technically a student. This month I was chargerd tax at 20% and prsi and usc, the month previous I just paid prsi and usc.
I worked throughout my college time but never earned more than 12,000. But at this moment I still havnt earned more than 12,000 and won't for another few months.
I can't find any actual information on revenue website.
I will go talk to my local revenue office but I would like to have my facts straight first.

Many thanks for any advice in advance 😊

firstly Revenue doesn't care if someone is a student or not, it simply looks at earnings and then taxes appropriately. People often assume that students don't pay tax. But what is really true is that more often than not, students don't earn enough to enter the PAYE threshold.

Have you given your new employer a 2015 P45 from a previous job this year? If you have, your employer should contact Revenue and get the appropriate tax rates to be applied for you for the remainder of 2015. If you don't have a P45 from this current year, give your employer your PPS number and they should apply for your appropriate tax rates. you can speed things up though if you contact revenue yourself, have your PPS number, the company's registered number and the date you started work. If you have unused tax credits from Jan start work date, you will get a refund when its sorted and you are on the correct tax rates. Tax is based on 12 months year cumulatively. If it determines that you would earn (for example) 20k by the end of this year, it will even your out tax liabilities for the remaining 6 months. It doesn't wait until you have earned up to the thresholds and then start taxing you.
