Transporting a pet cat from Spain to Ireland in August

Hi all,

Any help here is seriously appreciated. I live in Madrid, Spain and I want to travel home to Ireland in August until September. I need to be able to bring my adult pet cat with me.

I contacted Aerlingus to be told that pets cannot be carried on their European routes in the cabin or as checked baggage and that I should contact Aerlingus Cargo – I did so and they then told me that there is an embargo on carrying live animals in July and August from Spain due to high temperatures.

I’m in panic mode now so if anybody could suggest an alternative avenue to go down I would be very grateful. I know that the cat cannot travel to Ireland in a plane cabin but surely there is some other way of getting it to Ireland!?

most of the animal transporters don't do trips to Europe in July or August due to the high temperatures. So the only way I think you could do it is drive yourself.

However, I wouldn't recommend it as you cat could overheat in the car during the period you have to leave the car eg. when you stop off for coffee breaks etc and it wouldn't be a comfortable trip for the cat.

Do you really 'need' to bring the cat with you or would you just prefer it. Could you not find boarding locally and leave the cat where it is.

Best thing to do is to drive then, sedate your cat to the eyeballs and make sure it's getting water constantly

How if the cat is sedated can you get it to take on water.

The reason the transporters don't take animals during this period is that it is simply too hot to safely and comfortably move animals on the continent. OP either needs to find alternative accommodation for the cat or change dates of travel.

You should never sedate a cat for travel unless the vet says there's no other option and even then it's touch and go...

How much are you willing to spend? I used a private "pet transport" to moved the furball over from London. From chatting to the guy , he does this from all over Europe (a few trips have been from the U.S. and Canada) Usually for pedigrees but was more than happy to move my mongrel.

Ah - just saw it is for month's trip. Unless the cat is a good traveller it may be too harrowing for the little fella as it can take a week or two to settle in. I second the kennel or leave it with friends you trust for the month.

Bisounours what time of year where you travelling? The reason I ask is that any transporters I know wont travel at the time the OP wants to.

Moved last Sept - but from London which means a lot chillier than Spain at that time of year! I do remember when we went off to HK the airline was very specific about not travelling summer months though.

The transporters will be running again in September but not August . Its just too hot in August to move the animals.
