    Hi all,

Currently my dad is out of work. He is in his mid 50's and doesn't know what to do with himself. He ran his own courier business for years and was self employed, the business is gone now. He worked for fastway couriers for 4 years after but has bad legs so he chose his health over hos wealth. At his age, he is struggling to find anything that?

He is not entitled to any dole and He was looking at doing a FAS course to improve his chances of getting something but he is not entitled to this either.

Has anyone been in this situation before and if so could they advise on what he should do?

Is there any courses he could sit to enhance his chances of getting into certain jobs?

any advise would be greatly appreciated!

OP, I've moved your thread to the Work & Jobs forum where I think you'll get better responses. Everyone, please not the forum's charter.

Well what sort of jobs does he want to get into?
There are lots of things that he could do.

My mam is 61 and with no previous qual's she's 3 yrs into a counselling course. She loves it and hopes to work as a counsellor when she's finsihed.

Well I know He was looking at Bluebird who are like a healthcare company but i think he may need to look into doing a FETAC course.

I suppose he is not really up to date with technology and the web so i want to help him as much as i can because i know mum is starting to worry!

Thats very encouraging to hear about your mother , good on her.

How is she studying? full time, part time, online??

Op what about getting him to do a transport managers/planner course?

With his background in the courier business and his age and experience, running a depot should be a good fit for him

Unless the 'courses' are covered by a subvention, I would urge him to avoid them. Too many vulnerable people and folks who should know better are being unnecessarily milked.

Would he be open to helping other people run their businesses, and consulting them in logistics, transportation, suppliers, etc? He has built up a vast amount of knowledge, and it would be useful for any international company that is willing to expand into Ireland.

He could be a consultant for them and charge fees for advice sessions.

I think this is the way to go - consultant roles etc. I know that I am in my early 40's, have a good job but am starting to already panic at what may happen in 10 years time!

First things first, what can he / can't he do because of this?

Has he fully checked this out i.e. gone into DSP office and asked them for information?

This, he should contact DSP, if not eligible for payment, he should sign for credits which will open eligibility to training courses.
