I had the grip on my Newport replaced with a red scotty cord one but find it is very hard. Has anyone had the same experience?

I had a similar issue actually. Really impacted my putting stats.

Becacuse it was a Scotty Cameron putter I was very slow to stop using it. In hindsight I should have changed putter and tried something else but to be honest I liked having it in the bag when playing and coming on forums like this to say 'yeah - I have a Scotty Cameron'.

In the end over 18 months my handicap went from 3 to 22 because of this. It ravaged almost every aspect of my game and even mentally, off the course I had some issues.

Rock bottom came when I 7 putted the final green in the Captains prize last year when a 6 putt would have gotten me into the playoff. I knew something had to change so I sold on the Scotty and picked up a Dunlop Snakedrainer putter off sportsdirect. Not quite the putter to be boasting about on boards but almost immediately I saw some confidence return to my game. I stated to play well again and 4 ESR's later I was back into single figures with the highlight being 59 points in the open singles in Lahinch in a 50KM wind!!

Even off the course my confidence returned and I was able to speak with girls again. Having spent 2 years trying to chat up the 'high-handicap' ladies i can now report that I'm currently engaged to a single figure stunner!!!

Safe to say I will be sticking with my Dunlop Snakedrainer for the forseeable future!

OP - I hope my story can help you in some small way

    Take care

I got a new SC recently and went for their new 'matador' grip

Much prefer it to the standard grip

It has much more feel - it's kinda spongy

Thanks Guys. Still not sure if the shop put on an original SC cord grip on my Newport. It is red and looks authentic with the zigzag cs name etc on the front but is very hard compared with the sc pistolini grip which I think is the normal one and on Newports in the shops. I also have a SC X5R with the matador mid size grip that is nice and soft. The two putters are completely different. For me the Newport is all in the fingers and suits the thinner grip whereas the X5 feels much heavier promoting a straight back and through stroke that suits the thicker grip... and I know Speith has a thick grip on a Newport!!

I found the cord grip very hard, didn't offer any feel and was very slippy after a year of using it. I had it replaced with a Pistolini and it is 100 times better.

My thinking also. I haven't found anyone who stocks them... all seems to order them as needed but that is what happened with my cord grip!! Do you mind me asking where you got the pistolini grip and how much you paid?

I'm off to buy a Snakedrainer.

Sorry I had my putter refurbished in the UK and they supplied the grip. Theputterroom.com if you are interested, I don't know if they sell grips separately though.

Halpennygolf in Carrickmines sent mine to the UK to be re-gripped by Titleist. They charged €30 for it including postage. Took about 10 days.

There's plenty of them knocking around on adverts from anywhere between 20 and 40 yo yos. Agree on the matador, it's a lovely grip. Find the pistolini a bit thin, same as the old ping man grips. Personal favourite is the pistolero, has a nice bulge at the upper rear of the grip where the left hand sits.

Got a pistilero and a matador for 20 each in McGuirks a few weeks ago. The lad was looking for them for ages out the back and didn't seem to know the actual price when he returned. Paid swiftly and hot tailed it out.

Lots of fake pistolero's knocking about. I had one I got on adverts and only realised it wasn't the same when I got my putter back from Titleist. The one my mate got on ebay is also different from the official one too. That said, I didn't find the fake to be anyway inferior to the real one, worked fine for me.

Good deal in McGuirk's, they don't usually have them!

There's a business in fake Scotty gear alright. I know a guy in a shop who took a trade in on one recently without really checking it at all. It was a GoLo. Turned out it was nearly made of plastic. He won't make that mistake again. Bizarrely, a fella still offered him 75 quid for it knowing that it was a fake!

Exactly. That's why I was wondering if the cord grip I got is the real deal as I was surprised it is so hard

Cord grips can feel a bit hard, in my lay man's experience, tho I suppose your local pro would settle the debate straight away for you. They'd know a fake a mile off.

You are right. The only problem is that I didn't ask my club pro to do it in the first place!!!

Asked my club pro to look at the putter grip. He really liked it, confirmed the grip was original and that it is intentionally hard so it will remain firm without any give especially in warm weather

Do you like it though? I prefer hard grips, but they're not for everyone

I take your point and am not sure yet but the comments from my Pro have completely changed my thinking and I will give it another serious go
