Nothing more annoying that some one blasting out some Irish manure, a pub is where you go for a drink. Go to mass if you want to sing.

I go to the pub for a conversation, not to listen to some yahoo murder Dean Martin

See post #2. I recall going into a pub in Dublin city centre a few years ago, hoping to have a quiet drink after a horrible day at work, only to be greeted by some fool playing the spoons doing his best impression of Luke Kelly.

The problem is that excessive alcohol reduces inhibitions and can make certain people forget that their singing ability is on a par with the amphibians,so whether is is the soused middle aged lady after too much wine or gin rattling off Mary Black or some chap yodeling spancil hill, why should my company and I be hushed and shusshhed to placate these off key soaks?

I never know which is worse, singing in pubs or that prick at a house party or social gathering who brings along a guitar and insists on doing an acoustic rendition of Hallelujah or some hippy crap.

Wouldn't most people go to a café for a quiet coffee and a chat? Why would they want to listen to some drunken lúdramáns?

In general, there isn't as much enthusiasm for singing in pubs as in the past, so I don't think you should have them in every pub as most people won't be interested. Most towns and cities have pubs which are known for live traditional music, which would facilitate a singalong, and most people looking for a bit of craic agus ceol would know to go there.

Tried to sing 'The Auld Triangle' whilst playing the spoons. It was hard to forget.

I heard some of them even have these new fangled coffee machines and do sandwiches. Scandalous.

Dafuq are you going to a cafe bar and expecting a sing song for?

The great Billy Connolly sums up these drunken singers perfectly...

Some of the best house parties I've been at involved drunken singing and guitar playing, but maybe I was just fortunate enough to know some good musicians.

A bunch of us got kicked out of a pub in Galway for having a sing song about 15 years ago.

I don't mind people singing in pubs as long as they actually can sing.

I detest shushers and being a shushee. If the entertainment is good enough people will listen, if it isn't people will get on with their lives and have their chat.

A pub I know has designated singing nights. So you can choose to go in or not.

I really enjoy them myself, especially when the lads are all decent baritones and tenors who can hold a tune. :)
