Blender is probably the best free animation program going. It isn't too easy to pick up quickly and like similar paid for packages, has a lot of complexity. There are however a multitude of online resources and tutorials available.

Yes Blender is free, and then you have Maya and 3dMax, but you can probably download them as a student, I think they have that option free for students
