Hi guys, any advice/tips for first time Pride-goers?

(I'm a closeted 20 yr old gay girl going to Dublin Pride this weekend with my bi best friend and neither of us have ever been before)

I would recommend finding a spot on O'Connell St where you can see everything and not budging! Otherwise you won't be able to see much. I wouldn't bother following to Merrion Sq or anything. Stick around Capel St / Parliament St / Georges St.

I think listening to the speeches in Merrion Square this year might be very atmospheric and enjoyable given the context.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

This year more than any other I'd agree. I suspect that, as a closet/shy/newly out (delete as appropriate) the atmosphere and speeches there this year could easily act as an inspiration

My first Prides were as a teenager, going in after the parade to sample the atmosphere and end up wherever I could get in to that night - but that was actually a considerable time ago at this stage, far smaller event and far less to celebrate.

I mean normally I would skip the speeches but not this year

I am a bit meh about the speeches. Seems like just another opportunity for the usual suspects to congratulate themselves again and honestly I think I've had my fill of that for a while.

    Who are the usual suspects?

Quite a few high profile people (many straight and plenty of them were not politicians either) put themselves out during the campaign, many went above and beyond the call of duty. They deserve our thanks.

I heard a few people saying they couldn't be bothered with the Pride village because they can't get an alcoholic drink there, they need to grow up. It'll be a long day and there will be plenty of time for drinking later, there's no point of being sh*tfaced and out of steam by 6 or 7 in the evening.

I didn't suggest that they didn't and which of them do you feel hasn't already been heartily thanked and praised? As I said I personally feel that I have had my fill of hearing the usual suspects thats all. Plenty of others in less privileged positions also went above and beyond the call of duty as you are no doubt aware.

Ah I am not going to go and name names, that would be needlessly divisive and look like a personal attack on whoever I mentioned. I'm not trying to discourage people from attending I just expressed that I have had my fill of it for a while.

Yes we did (I canvassed myself), but high profile names were vital, there are one or two that I've got little time for (politicians especially but a few others besides) but like you I don't want to get into a mudslinging match. Enjoy the day tomorrow.

Tbh there's a few people who milk it, absolutely. I've no interest in hearing from them. At the same time, there's a few who deserve thanks at every turn imo, and without whom we would not have come this far so quickly.

That's definitely true unfortunately I feel the contribution of these people has been sidelined to a certain extent. Anyway its day for for celebration and happiness and most definitely not listening to me cribbing.
