First Car

I know there are always loads of threads on this, but anyway!

I am looking at buying my first car soon. I am a 26 year old female and almost finished my 12 lessons, looking at doing my test in a couple of months, but want my own car first!

My budget is €3000 (for just the car!). I will be using it for driving to work, which is a short city commute. And also driving to my Mothers house every now and then which is two hours away.

Looking at a car that is cheap to tax/insure and is reliable.

I have been getting conflicting information about what car to get from everyone I've asked, so really don't know what to get!

I am thinking a Fiesta, Micra or Clio. A Fiesta would be my favourite out of the lot, but I haven't seen a huge amount for sale in my area. There are a good few Micras for sale (2002-2004), has anyone got experience with these? There are also a lot of Clios around and I do like them, but people keep telling me to stay away from French cars.

Which would be the best option out of these three? And any other ideas? I have was also thinking about a Yaris, they do tend to be a bit more expensive though..

That generation of Micra is not very good, timing chains are known to stretch on those engines and need replacing.

My first choice would be a Yaris, then followed by a Fiesta and then a Clio. You will pay top money for a good Yaris but you will get alot of it back when it's time to sell it on.

A buddy of my brothers is selling a 2003 Micra for 2K, just passed NCT, and has 63,000 miles on it. Seems alright, and was going to have a look at it tomorrow. But a bit unsure now after reading your post! I have a heard some bad things about that generation on Micras from others also, so I don't know..


There is a nice looking Yaris here: Yaris that I was thinking of having a look of, didn't intend on spending that much though!

Your paying for the dealer's profit margin and warranty in that price, not much value in buying a car that age off a dealer.
