    Hi folks,
15 years since I cycled outside of a gym. Have bought a Jupiter hybrid bike. Went for first cycle today. Felt sitting on the saddle uncomfortable. It's a thin saddle. From what I've read it's a case of getting used to it? Might also look at cycle shorts if they would help?

Have a helmet and water bottle. Hope is to start slow and maybe build up to 5 or 10km spins over the summer months.

Anyone use their mobile phone on your bike for tracking purposes etc?

Would also appreciate a link to reasonably priced good cycle shorts

    Cheers
    Mick

after a few rides your ass gets used to the saddle, but you could by a cushion saddle to put over it.

you need cycling shorts asap. a good pair as well. or else your skin will start to chafe and you get a rash which is very sore. you can order one online sports direct but id buy a good pair because it makes all the difference.

i dont do it myself but you can download apps onto your phone that will track everything. i like you mainly stick to small trips around the city and mainly do hills as well, so that gives me a work out

edit: you could also get anti-chafing cream if going on long journeys. if i go on an 80km journey id be using a lot of cream down below.

good luck anyhow. its gets addictive and after a while you will probably want a road bike to go a bit quicker

The dhb range on wiggle http://www.wiggle.co.uk/ are very good (imo) and have different price points depending on budget.

Strava is excellent and free, you can pay €5 a month to subscribe for a few extra features but the free option is more than good enough.

Another item to consider for comfort reasons is cycling gloves with padded palms -- these really help on long rides on rough roads.

What part of Dublin are you based , maybe we can suggest some routes, get shorts and download strava free. It won't be long until your doing 30 k believe it or not .

I'd be putting it inside a freezer bag in an under the saddle bag, or else in one of the bags that goes on the top of the toptube, You wouldn't be long wrecking it if you get caught in a shower.

If you get a jersey with pockets in the back you can stick the phone in there, but still in a freezer bag, the sweat from you could shorten the life of the phone too

    Was thinking something like this?

What's the safety view on listening to music while cycling? Bad idea?

I was you a few months ago - within 7 weeks I'd cycled 93k to Wexford over the Sally Gap. :) You'll be amazed at the distances you can get on a bike and the enjoyment you'll have making them. Strava is a great way to motivate yourself as you can watch the kilometers build up, and try to beat your times on segments of runs you've done before.

That phone mount looks fine if you have the funds. I tend to just keep mine in my jersey back pocket.

You've got the shorts, great - your rear end will toughen up in no time. A pair of cycling gloves in Pennys are €3. They also sell a zip-up waist pouch for the same price. Aldi are also running specials from this Sunday, with gloves, socks, etc. Will probably pick up another jersey myself as cycling tops with pockets in the back is the only way to go and cying to work 5 days a week you go through a few.

Prepare to spend your early days on www.wiggle.com, and then, like me, perusing through potential future road bikes because the you can't beat your times anymore on a hybrid!

Howya Mick, Keep an eye out for stuff in Aldi, I use sports direct too, real easy to use and reasonably priced.

For your phone, I use Mapmyride, totally free and very good app.

i got rid of strava as i was getting some funky readings, speeds of over 70kph, going up inclines recorded @ 23% and not recording rides. I have gone to mapmyride & am happy out!

    happy trails.
