Grand Canal Way - Sallins to Inchicore on a roadbike?

    Hi all,

I asked Strava to plot me a course from Kilkenny to Dublin with 'min elevation' and it has suggested i take the Grand Canal Way from Sallins towards Dublin. My knowledge of this is limited, but if it is anything like the Royal Canal Way near Maynooth (which I know of a little more), it could be just a dirt track and not suitable for road bikes.

Can anyone confirm? Thus necessitating plotting a new course?

(recommendations for routes Kilkenny-Dublin also warmly received!)

    Thanks!

Loads of grass and singletrack, no stones though.

Doable, but you may suffer - I've done it on 32mm slicks. 28mm tyres min. recommended.

Here's a nice route from Sallins to dublin on country lanes with no hills. The canal is mostly grass and would be harder than hills in my opinion. https://www.strava.com/activities/262325362

A bit dodgy on slicks if has been raining for a prolonged period, particularly the mudpool as you start the stretch to Hazelhatch. Great fun, but neither bike nor rider will look that pretty on arrival. I reckon my bike was about 4kg heavier with mud after the round trip to Sallins last winter.

Yeah - to echo what others have said it's rough around Sallins/Hazelhatch with bumpy grass and mud - a route like the one connie_c posted would be easier - I attempted to go from Sallins to Straffan last autumn on my hybrid and eventually wussed out fearing I'd end up covered in mud or in the canal or both !

My memory is that the run from the Newcastle Road in is paved - but there are gates, etc.

Thanks everyone! I don't mind mudpools when armed with a proper mountain bike and gear. :-) Sounds like I'll stick to the road and connie_c that route looks great! I'll drop it in to the plan. Cheers!
