I have been told to go for a silvertip shaving brush. However don't have a clue as to what type is the best and where to get it.

    Anyone have any advice.

    Thanks

Best bang for your buck I can think of is this one.

When it comes to shaving brushes expensive doesn't mean better. A lot of guys don't like badger and prefer a good bore brush. Then there are some guys that think synthetic brushes are the way to go like a plisson shaving brush, http://ie.loccitane.com/plisson-shaving-brush,103,1,47842,440282.htm#s=47963

    I have many different brushes,

My two of my favorite's being,
The Semogue Owners Club 2, http://www.shaving.ie/products/semogue-owners-club-2-boar-ash.html The perfect brush in my mind.

The Simpson Duke 2 a best badger. Real quality made brush worth the money.

The Plisson synthetic and Silvertip that I own I find too soft. Like a makeup brush too soft.

If you want to spend money on a expensive brush then I would recommend a Simpson Chubby 2 or HL Thater Black 2 Band 4125/2. http://www.shaving.ie/products/hl-thater-black-2-band-4125-2.html

If you want a Rolls Royce shaving brush then you'll want a Morris & Forndran and they're not easy to get. http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php/177098-Morris-amp-Forndran-Blonde-Badger?highlight=Morris+%26amp%3B+Forndran

If you're going to be face lathering look for a slightly smaller knot. I have a Semogue 2000 and it's a bit on the big size for lathering up on the face and I often end up with lather flying everywhere.

I've bought quite a few over the past 2-3 years, including Semogue, Simpsons, Shavemac, Thater, Muhle, and Plisson. To my surprise the synthetics proved to be the best ones to use, as well as being pretty good value. My recommendations would be:
    • Plisson synthetic (very soft tips and light on backbone)
    • Muhle silvertip fibre (synthetic - bit more backbone than Plisson)

And I'm waiting on delivery of a Fine synthetic brush that was only $20 (excluding postage).

Synthetics give great lather either in a bowl or directly on your face, and they don't need any pre-soaking. Although my Shavemac and Thater are good brushes it's a few synthetics that sit in the bathroom and now get pretty constant use.

That Plisson gets absolutely rave reviews. Must give it a go at some stage.

Update - I was passing by a L'Occitane shop earlier today and picked up a Plisson. This thing is easily the best brush I've ever used. It's on the small side so I found it perfect for face lathering and the tips are extremely soft. I have a puck of Nanny's Silly Soap that I've always found hard to lather up but with the Plisson I had huge soft white peaks of lather whipped up in no time.
