Wedding Band Playlist

My wedding is soon and I'm starting to panic a bit about the music. I want to make sure the music is to the crowds pleasing.

Its a northern wedding but we have a Dublin band. I want as much Irish Jiving style music as possible as the crowd that's there will like that but now i'm starting to worry that this won't suit our band. To be fair to the band they are going to ring me this week to decide on what music we want so I want to be prepared. Their set list doesn't seem to have much jiving stuff on it at first look so I was wondering could someone help me on the following queries:

    1. Can you suggest some suitable songs for me to suggest to the band?

    2. How many songs would a wedding band average on the night?

Have you asked the band if they have more stuff outside their given setlist?
A band will need time to rehearse and get song ready - dont just expect them to play lots more you want!
Do you need to reconsider your band choice if their setlist isn't what you want?
Not sure about number of songs, but a decent band should be on for at least 2hrs.

What kind of music does the band play? What is Irish jiving music? I think at a wedding you can't have a really specific type of music if you've a mixed crowd like most people do, older and younger people.

We had a band that played a lot of wedding staples, and played them well. They played a few old timey pieces that cleared the floor so reverted back to the more popular stuff. Also learned our fisrt dance song, but that was because they said it was easy enough to learn quickly. Ours played about 2 hours, and there was a break of about half an hour for the evening food.

Oh id say you will be ok don't let it stress you. The band will advise on popular songs.

Off the top of my head jive songs would be any Elvis funky ones, maybe listen (I know this sounds sad I still have the tape) but the Jive bunny playlist they are all jiving songs..

What songs does the band normally play

You picked the band for a reason. If they are wedding pros I would say just let them get on with it.

Ours aren't a wedding band so its a bit risky. But I am going to let them work it out for themselves as I know they are good entertainers. Hopefully it will work out ok.

We had a specific type of music in mind originally too (swing) but we couldn't book a decent swing band for our date, so we settled on a band that does a mix of everything, including swing.

If your band aren't a specific jive band, I don't think you can expect them to play much jive music. Why did you book them? It sounds like they're not the style you're looking for, and you're not happy with the set list?

I dont get why you booked a band which you were not comfortable with their style and playlist. Wedding bands know how to floor fill better than the Bride or groom and should be let play the style they play. No harm in saying to err on the side of more jive/swing type music but you cant give them your own playlist!!!

From being in a band myself, an average wedding setlist would have 30/40 songs in the night. The band should accommodate you with any songs you request as long is there is sufficient time for them to learn them. Depending on how experienced the band is, you shouldn't have to worry. They will have the regular tunes that cater for all ages :) They should have a jiving medley somewhere on the setlist!

Have a look at this Irish site that gives you samples/recommendations of all the genres. If you want anymore info, feel free to give me a PM anytime.

Thanks everyone. Maybe just freaking out about nothing.

We picked them based on a showcase and have never got to see them at a wedding yet but we meant to but didn't have the time.

Mightydrumming thanks for the list link but why did you pick that - theres not much on the jive list?

Sorry, I should of made it clearer! The link might give you a heads up of what a typical wedding band would cover. Give them a buzz and even ask them for a medley so it's not putting pressure on them to learn particular jiving songs, shouldn't be a problem. Have a good day and try not to worry, weddings are the most stressful events to organise but it will pay off! Have a good one :)

Haha only seeing this now! Where would the bassist be without a drummer sure? :pac: Aye, good set-list indeed!
