Yes they do. The accuracy can vary a little depending on what type of phone you have - iPhone is usually spot on but some Android phones can be a bit off. In general though, the apps track runs in a field as well as they do on the road.

I've tried out pretty much every app but keep coming back to RunKeeper because it has a good balance of fancy features while being easy to use.

You can use more than one app at a time to track a run which is handy when you want to compare a few of them. You just need to remember to start and stop tracking in each app.

I've never had the need myself but there are plenty of apps if you search for "jump rope" in the Play store or App Store.

I use map my run and find it works well most of the time. I also have a fitbit Zip which clips on my belt. It's like a pedometer but measures distance pretty accurately - it links to an app to log steps and miles per day (or running session).

If you are running laps of a field then any app is going to be quite a bit off with it's calculations of the distance covered. It will either be cutting corners, or just putting random spikes into the run route when you look at the map afterwards, that is not going to be any different based on if you are using a droid or fruit based phone. The biggest factor in how accurate the distance is will be down to how short the laps of the field are, the longer you run in a straight line the more accurate the distance will be. If you just run 400m laps it will be very inaccurate, although you could always count the laps.

Different apps will also calculate different distances based on the same original GPS data that gets collected. For example a set of GPS data points collected by a Garmin watch and you will find a different distance calculated by the watch, then different again when you upload it to Garmin online, and different again when Strava syncs the data. None of them are wrong, they just have different ways of figuring out where you ran and smoothing out the weird data points.
