Having a problem where when I come to the stop light or sign, once I get down to about 10 MPH the brakes begin to grind really bad ( like metal on metal) . I thought my pads were worn down but I looked at them today and they looked fine to me. They actually seems to have quite a bit of brake left on them.

What else could be causing this? It seems like its coming from the front driver side of the car

    its a 05 tdi passat
    Any help would be great.

    Thanks in advance!

    david

Have you had a good luck at the inside pads?

Some pads have a tell tale, a little tab that sits quietly by the side of the pad when its new, but when it wears down starts screeching against the disc. It may be this?

Assuming you're serious, there's 2 pads per wheel. If you were just looking through the wheel, it can be hard sometimes to judge the thickness of the one on the inside. As has been said, it could also be a wear indicator which is designed to screech off the disc when the pad wears right down. There's usually a few mm left on the pad at this stage but definitely time to change.
