i use a gillette fusion pro glide razor and i get terrible irratation on my face when the blue strip is almost white or even almost half faded. I usually only get about 10-12 days out of one blade.

Is it normal to shave in the morning and then need a dry shave that night ??

You should never do a dry shave with a razor. Always make sure your beard is clean and hydrated before shaving. Your terrible irritation could be from a dulling blade but also a poor shaving routine. Do you shave after a shower? Do you use shave gel, oil, or soap? Are you shaving with the grain or against?

I'd recommend shaving after a hot shower using a fresh blade and shaving oil, not the can of goo. Shave with the grain and a cross but not against. My beard is very coarse so I only got 7 shaves out of a Fusion cartridge. This is the reason I switch to a DE razor. It might be the same with you too. If it starts to tug change it out for a fresh cartridge. Shaving twice a day can be normal for some people.

Even just using an aftershave balm would help, for instance the nivea stuff is inexpensive and widely available.

But the second poster is right, loads of ways you can improve how you shave to reduce irritation.

I changed to DE razors about 18 months ago and never looked back. Good blades, good technique and good products do really help.

I wouldn't be shaving a second time a day unless I absolutely had to, the chances are that's the main cause of your irritation. BTW what do you mean by dry shave?

I used to get awful irradiation with any Gillette blade I used, I tried everything. Shave oil, shaving during or after a shower etc. It didn't matter I got irradiation and spots.

I switched to a double edge razor in 2009 and I can honestly say it was best thing, skin improved by miles. Blades are nice and cheap so I can always make sure I have a fresh, sharp blade! Around 14e for blades and they last me around 2 years,.

If by dry shave you mean an electric shaver then I seriously recommend you don't use a electric shaver,

    - Definitely look into a good aftershave balm. Proraso white is designed for sensitive skin and I have to say it's really excellent stuff. Helps a lot with razor burn and leaves the skin moisturised but not greasy afterwards.

    - Moar lubrication. Try a preshave oil/balm to protect the skin and help the razor glide better.

    - Use proper shaving cream/soap and a brush. The gunk in a can is terrible stuff.

Long term, maybe look into DE shaving as the posters above mentioned. If you want to stick with cartridge razors, ditch the Fusion and try a Mach 3. Less blades, less irritation and they last longer to boot.

I usually shave before I shower. I use a hot cloth and press on my face and then put the shaving cream on

Hi folks , sorry OP for jumping in on your thread.

I also have a problem with rashs and irratation on my neck after shaving, I have considered trying DE razors but I also shave my head a few times a week. How safe would it be using the DE razors to shave my head or would I end up cut to pieces.

It can be done with a knife so it can be with a DE :D

In all seriousness though, once you're careful it shouldn't be an issue really.

Let the stubble grow out for a few days some weekend and take a look at the direction your neck hair grows in. Mine grows up at the bottom of the neck so for me, shaving upwards is going with the grain. For years I was just shaving down and always had a rash at the bottom of my neck.

Fair enough. You might want to try a preshave like this one from Proraso. I have nearly no irritation since I started using it.
