Problem with shower

In the place I'm renting, there is a Mira Go electric shower supplied off the mains. It has been a bit dodgy since the start, to be honest.

It has 3 settings, low, eco, and high, but the former two have never produced hot water.

But with the setting on high, you would get hot water so that was fine. With the temperature dial halfway between hot and cold, it was just right for the kids. It could occasionally act up, and you had to turn the temperature dial all the way up to get a weak spray of very hot water. But mostly it was fine.

Until today - basically that soft spray of very hot water is the only hot water that you can get. It's either that or cold water. I've listened to it carefully when it's on, and as I turn the dial, I can actually hear the faint (but clear) click as the piece I'm turing approaches the very end (hot end) of the dial. This click is turning it on, and sure enough, boiling hot water will follow.

If I try to turn it down, I'll hear the click again (maybe not exactly in the same place, but close), and there'll be nothing but cold water.

Before contacting the landlord, i thought I'd ask on here and see if there's anything that I can do myself first.

So, is there anything I can do?

That shower is very dependant on the mains water pressure, but also on outlet water pressure. I.e. if the shower head is scaled up or blocked. But It doesn't sound like it from your description.

If you mains is low, position the shower head as high as possible, adjust the spray pattern for the smallest water flow, or smallest number of jets. Make sure the washing machine/dishwasher isn't on, and nobody else is using cold water supply.

Other issues are; if somebody turns off the shower with the power button, the residual heat in the coils will immediately cause an overheat, which can stay active for a significant time. Cold water flow will cool this quickly, but if you turn the heat control to max during the cool down phase, it will overheat again.
as I turn the dial, I can actually hear the faint (but clear) click as the piece I'm turing approaches the very end (hot end) of the dial.

This sounds like low mains pressure

The 2 other settings are useless as you know

    It's bad water pressure.

This might sound a bit mad but you should try it. Try the shower at around 1am. Demand is very low at this hour so the pressure increases. If you can have a good shower at that time then it is definitely a water pressure problem.
Mains fed showers are not suitable for most of Ireland unless you put a pump on it. They are designed for the UK market where water pressure can be up to 10 bar. A triton t80z is rated up to 10 bar static pressure. Minimum 1 bar.

The clicking you here is either the pressure switch and thats my bet or possibly the tco.
