Insurance company requesting driving licence

Is this now a common thing?

I've been driving for 10+ years and not once has this ever been requested of me.

I received a letter from my insurance company stating my renewal was coming up and I was to send them a copy of my driving licence, failure to send would be seen as an unwanted renewal.

There was a time, many moons ago, long before cover over the phone and Internet, you had to produce it when applying for cover.
Never could understand how they covered someone without seeing their licence first, other than taking what money they could and then voiding any claim in the event of something being wrong with the licence.

take a decent picture of the front and back of licence and email it. takes about 3 mins

Nothing unusual there at all OP. Surprised you have never had to produce before.

Well sure it's not a bother to them, it is simply assumed that you're compliant with all requisite regulations around licensing, etc. If there's a later claim and you're found not to be, well then - tough.

Have you been with the same company for that 10 years? Did you ever show them a driving licence in the past - maybe soon after you passed the driving test? It's common when taking out a new policy that they ask to see your driving licence, otherwise they load you as a learner. And as soon as you pass the test and get a full licence, you show it to them to get that loading removed.

In your case it's possible that someone has suddenly noticed that you never showed them a licence so they want to see one, I have never had to show my licence since I passed the test and showed them my first full licence.

If you've been driving for more than 10 years you're on your 2nd licence so even if you have always used a broker or stayed with the same company! the licence that they have on record will be the wrong one, they are just updating their records and also making sure that your policy is valid so you will be covered if you forgot to renew the licence.

Every time I changed policy I've had to send a copy of my licence.

I've been with multiple insurance companies over the years, I can't really remember but I would guess I showed the first company, but nothing after that.

I've definitely had to send a copy of mine to my last 2 insurers.

One was Chartis through 25plus and the other was RSA through 123.
