Parents getting new dining table, what do with old one?

my parents are getting a new dining table and the current one which must be 40 odd years old would be a waste to throw away.

it's mahogany, 6 chairs (end chairs with arms), padded cushion inserts on all.

it's in need of repair, middle of table sagging and legs are wonky.
probably some hot plates rings on it too.

is there any place that buys old stuff and restores/sells it as part of their business?

it would be an awful shame to see this table/chairs just thrown in a skip.

can try to get some pics when over in the parents house next.

    Thanks

appreciate any help, people can give.
is there any antique dealers who value or take a look at old stuff like this?

OK, apologies in advance for being blunt but I think someone has to say this....
it's in need of repair, middle of table sagging and legs are wonky. probably some hot plates rings on it too.

So it gave good service, took a few knocks along the way thanks to the hurly-burly of family life and is now a worn-out 1970s dining room suite.
is there any place that buys old stuff and restores/sells it as part of their business?

No, the labour costs would mean that in order to show a profit they would have to sell it for more than the price of a new suite.
it would be an awful shame to see this table/chairs just thrown in a skip.

Your parents clearly don't think so, they decided to go out and buy a new suite to replace it. Why are you so worried about junking worn-out furniture?

p.s. the end chairs with arm rests are called 'carvers'.

That's a beautiful set, please don't dump it. If you put it up on the free section of adverts.ie you will have people biting your hand off for it. I would take it myself if I had the room.

Sell it on adverts.ie or similar if you don't want / need it. It's a beautiful piece of furniture and I'll take it off your hands if you wish.

thanks Totalelf ... I'm going to stick it up on donedeal for €75/€100 and see what happens.

If I get no offers within a week, it's yours to take.
    6 chairs and table

Just to be clear one leg and centre piece need repair.

Had a table to get rid of last week. Was solid wood, not sure what kind, with a dark varnish on it, around 20 years old. Good nick, one careful lady owner, as they say.
Rang a number of charity shops and none of them wanted it - one of them specifically said that dark-coloured dining sets simply won't sell with current fashions, so they can't take it from me. In the end I broke it up and brought it to the dump.

Looking at that it's a nice table, with a bit of TLC it could look fantastic. But it's pretty banjaxed, and not fit for everyday use in its current state. I'd just take TotalElf's offer and get it out the door rather than waste your time and money with donedeal tbh.

Thanks EpiphoneSpecial, it really is a beautiful set, I'll be surprised if your hand isn't snapped off for it. I'm only a rookie at restoration but I'd say it would come up lovely. Good luck with selling it, and remember if your stuck with it, I'll take it!

You will get a few quid for the chairs if you seperate it from the table.

The table is gone past its time - you can iron out the white rings and get a few tight u-shaped clips to straighten the top.
It's still going to be unsaleable but it will be functional again.

Passed it into the capable hands of TotalElf to restore it to its former glory.
