Summer 2016 - Royan

    Hi All,

I know it's a bit early to be looking at sites for next year but was hoping for some campsite recommendations from some of the regulars who travel down around the Royan area.

I was lucky enough to spend most of my summers every year as a child up to about 17 years old travelling around France with my parents. My father was a teacher so we spent about 3 months there every summer and I absolutely loved it. Some of my favourites were Biarittz, Argeles, Royan, Annecy and Frejus. I haven't been on a better holiday than the ferry to France and staying in the various campsites so I am really excited to start bringing my own kids next year and creating some great memories for them!

They will be 4 and 2 by then so I would be happy enough to travel down as far as Royan but wouldn't like to go any further with the driving, we will see how it goes next year and we might be brave enough to try as far as Frejus or somewhere like that the year after.

I am hoping to travel from Cork with Brittany Ferries but wouldn't have an issue going from Rosslare if we really needed to. We will be travelling from Portlaoise but the grandparents are going too and will be travelling from Limerick so ideally we would like to go from Cork.

So we are looking for any tips for this kind of trip, best websites for booking accommodation, nice campsites in and around that area, best time to book, etc.

    Cheers Guys :-)

Going with brittany ferries is the quickest option but sails from cork on saturdays and when u arrive next morning u will find almost nothing open bar petrol stns so make sure u have provisions for the 2 little ones. Les charmetts is a great siblu site near royan , lots of cycle tracks and there is a zoo nearby. Bonne anse plage is their other site in that area( going there in sept). Its a good spin down to royan from roscoff with 2 little ones 5 hrs + but arriving on sunday means the roads are quiet.

Bonne anse plage looks amazing, exactly what I'd be looking for. When would be the best times to start booking the accomodation?

Also, from looking at Brittany Ferries departure times this year, it looks like its about 9 in the evening. What time are you able to start boarding the ferry? I assume about 2 or 3 hours before this.

Brittany Ferries depart Cork on Saturday afternoons around 4 pm, getting into Roscoff around 7 a.m. on the Sunday. Coming home they leave Roscoff around 9 pm. I've done this trip 3 times and it's absolutely fabulous, holiday starts the second you get on board!

Edit: Sorry meant to add they start boarding around an hour or so beforehand as far as I can recall - open to correction here though

Ah ok, that sounds more like it. Nice time to be boarding so you can actually enjoy the facilities on the ship, I know its only 1 night but I always loved that part of the holiday and the Brittany Ferries ship looks amazing, so I'm hoping it's not too expensive but if there is only a couple of hundred in the difference, I would still go with them I think. My mother loves that ship and tells me its well worth it!

Following - also looking for ideas for next year.

We just returned from 2 weeks - first in Disney Paris and then 8 nights in Cote de Nacre - St. Aubin sur Mer. We did all the D Day beaches, Bayeaux, Honfleur etc.
The campsite was very clean, small supermarket on site, warm pools indoor & outdoor for the kids, quiet at night, but the bar - take away- restaurant in the evenings was small, next to entrance road so could not relax with kids playing around the stage. Also there were only a few families there, mostly elderly couples ?

The entertainment was very poor and the staff were not very friendly. The local town was also very quiet and besides walking on the empty promenade at night there was nowhere to go. It was a lovely holiday with great beaches but maybe a bit too quiet. We went in late June so no reason for it to be that quiet ?

We previously stayed in Bella Italia in May which had a bigger choice restaurants and more areas to sit out at night at chat with other families. Also stayed in La Baume, Frejus in May which had a livelier atmosphere.

We are looking for a campsite on west coast of France suited for 5 & 4 yr old for Late May or June next year anywhere within driving distance of either Cherbourg or Roscoff, which has good family facilities, decent restaurant, a town with life for evening strolls. Also looking for area with nice days out as get tired of being on site all the time. We don't mind driving.

    Thanks in advance.
