Uses for an old tablet?

Have an old (3/4 year old, 7'' low spec) tablet that basically sits and serves as a clock on my desk at the moment. It's good for little else to be honest at the moment.

It's not easily rootable or flashable so will have to say as is at android 4.04.

Just wondering what I could do with it really besides check the time at a glance as it's sat upright in it's euroshop stand :P

It won;t really hold much of a charge so stays connected to the pc usb all day. So maybe something lightweight I could run on it to make it more than just a clock, hate throwing things out that could have use :D

Edit: It also has a more useful HDMI out but it's specs and battery life don't lend to making it an android tv box.

Download those moving wallpapers and you can pretend it's a fire, a fish tank, loads of other stuff :pac:

I heard a pretty ingenious thing where there's these lightbulbs, which can be controlled from a tablet. This guy screwed an old one to a wall and turned it into a light switch. Haha.

My tablet has essentially just become how I stream things to my TV via Chromecast, so it's now become the most expensive remote control I've ever had.

I've built one into my dashboard, and have it connected via USB. I then have a Bluetooth GPS receiver that allows me use my tablet as a speedo!

I'll probably download some form of free apps (full maps) and use it as a live sat nav

Maybe install a weather app onto it, so it shows the time as well as upcoming weather?

And if you get the bus/train/luas much, maybe have the times of when the next bus/train/luas is due at your local stop?

I use my old tablets for
WiFi camera monitor/wifi lights and socket control (wemo)
Internet radio/music streaming to Bluetooth speakers.

Alternatively get a sturdy case and give it to a 3 year old, you'll make their day!

If the tablet will play video files at DVD quality you can also pick up a car mount and attach it to the front headrests and keep kids in the back entertained.

If built in battery is rubbish you could use a slim external USB power bank.

For an iPad you can get an app which allows you to use it as a second display for your PC screen, not sure if it works for android too.

Do you have a few unused envelopes on your desk or maybe some spare printing paper or other loose documents? You could put the tab on top of those to stop the wind blowing them off your desk. My old 2009 htc desire is doing a super job at that. Replaced my cast iron paper weight.

There are apps for android that allow you to use your phone/tablet as a touchpad for your computer. Not sure what the latency is like on it.

    WiFi camera monitor

Do you use the tablet as the camera, streaming to other devices via the cloud, or just as the screen to view a camera stream on?

If the former, can you point me in the direction of the apps you are using for this please.

I use tinycam pro (android app) on the tablet to view footage from several foscam/dlink cameras on the tablets.

Sounds like you want to use the actual tablet as the camera in which case something like IP webcam android app is what you need. This guide might help http://www.howtogeek.com/139373/how-to-turn-an-old-android-phone-into-a-networked-security-camera/
