    I have this coin for over 40 years and it looked old even when I got it first!

    I would like to know what country this coin is from and the denomination and age of the coin.

    Unfortunately I don't understand the symbols or language on this coin and would really like to know its origin.

    Could anyone please help identify this coin?

    It's an Ottoman (now Turkey) 40 para coin from 1857. There is an example (exact same coin) at the link below which says that almost 4 million were minted in that year so not exactly a rare item!

    Thanks for the information. I have always wondered about this coin and the mystery is now solved. It is much older than I expected.
    158 this year so it was over 100 years old when I was given it as a child.

    Your help is appreciated.
