    Hi All,

I'm off school so I've decided to get fit starting this summer. I have played a lot of GAA but got out of it a few years ago, I referee now and I'm back playing a small bit as well.

I'm looking to start running but a couch to 5k program doesn't really suit me as I can run at a light enough pace for 20-25 minutes already, but I'm about 30 pounds overweight so I definitely need to improve that figure.

I plan to start out slow at 3k 5 times a week and increase this value by 10% each week, as I get fitter I hope to introduce some HIIT running as well.

So basically what do you think of this plan? Too much or to little, am I starting at the right point, is 5 times a week too much or too little?

    Thanks!

As my old coach used to say "you can't outrun a bad diet"

If you feel that the weight is the stumbling block start by addressing this, by the school reference though I would warn against getting stuck into calorie restriction but rather focus on quality of food.

With it being summer holidays you will probably have a but more free time on your hands so be proactive in preparing meals.

I wouldn't go from 0 to five days a week try 3 times a week at low intensity starting off with a rest day in between and build up from there.

Running too hard and too fast is the biggest mistake people always have when starting out.

Thanks for the advice, and yes I will of course be altering my diet and I agree that counting calories may not be the best solution, and I will as you say, focus on the quality of food.

As for the number of days a week, I should have mentioned that I walk for about 30-40 mins 2/3 times a week and I referee a game at least once a week which involves lots of explosive sprints and pretty constant movement for 60 minutes, I measured that I moved 8km in one game I did few months back albeit at a fairly slow pace as there is obviously periods of walking and standing still. Considering this would you still recommend keeping it to 3 times a week in the beginning, thanks for your help!!
