Saving to emigrate on the dole

    Hi,
I get €100p/w on the dole and I'm moving to France to be an au pair (and get away from this country for a bit).

I'm wondering if anyone knows how people on the dole are able to save up to emigrate?
My mam swears there's plenty of people in my position able to do it, and I'd love to see how they budget.

I contribute €20p/w to my household, within the last week I've started cycling and bringing my own food out with me, but I still seem to be pretty strapped.
I do tend to go out once a week, but try not to spend too much (I think I'd go mad if I wasn't able to socialise, even). Taxi home from town is about a tenner.
Monthly I spend €30 on phone credit and I love my netflix account so am reluctant to let that go.
I never get any money from my mother

I've a small amount saved from when I was working and that's going towards language school fees when I get there.

I can see two places where you can cut back...

I think E30 a month for the phone is an insane amount of money to pay. That's almost a third of your dole gone before you do anything else. Cut the data package if you have one. Do you have internet access at home? If you do, then definitely cut off the data package and switch to WiFi only. I don't know where you are, but there might be one or two WiFi hot spots where you can surf the net for free. You can also send webtexts which depending on your provider, you can send about 250 texts for free monthly. It varies by provider, so you need to check.

You've got to have an occasional treat, so the Netflix is fine. Cut down the nights out to twice monthly. The rest of the time, you can have your mates round with a couple of bottles of wine, or perhaps you can go round to theirs with a bottle of wine. That won't cost much.

E100 isn't a lot of money, so you really need to watch the pennies carefully. Having said that, it'll be difficult to save, but not impossible.

    Hope this helps.

Right lets break it down should :)

    You get €400 monthly.

    80 p/m to the household.
    Socializing drink + taxi = 100PM
    Phone 30PM
    Netflix 7PM

Total outgoings = just under 220. Thats 180 left to save. I have two ways for you to cut back.

Cut your socializing in half, so you go out twice a month instead of 4 times. Thats €50 extra saved.
Change your phone provider who offer deals starting from €10 up to €20 link here. Use whatsapp, facebook messenger for messaging.

Thats another possibly 80 quid a month saved so you have 260 to save.

Well not quite, it's not 30€/week.
