I've a weeks holidays mid-late July, friend of mine cancelled last minute so I'm thinking of either going abroad on my own somewhere with nice running routes around (preferably not Spain ) or joining in with a running group on a package if that's an option. I'm 28 & Female.

If anyone has any suggestions I'd really appreciate it.

I have done this as a weeks holiday, in normal sun spots, like Lanzarote- puertodelcarmen , fuerteventura , and the Algarve, ie fly, apartment, run maybe 12 times in a week and just rest eat and tour around the remainder.! The heat can knock the pace out of it at this time of year but good for miles etc and you can recover easier if off work...
havent done training camps etc but if you looked at http://www.fullpotential.co.uk/go/algarve or 209 events, embrace sports, clarendon tours etc etc you would get an idea of what you could do, whether by going with one of these or just doing it the self catering way. club la santa well known one also
Definitely a good way of spending a week.

That sounds exactly what I'm looking for. Never been to Portugal so Algarve definitely sounds like a goer will have a proper look at the links when I have time this evening. Thanks so much for the info !:)

I did a few road runs around Lagos in the Algarve last year which was great but I did find the heat a killer, I used to get up early to avoid it..fecking achilles tendonitis has ruined this years plan..aghh

http://www.clublasanta.co.uk/ might be worth looking at also, some of my running club have been & enjoyed it. If your not into the lying on the beech holiday its a good alternative

This looks cool (even if it is Spain), the trails around Girona are great, I know that much. A bit pricey for my liking but may be suitable.

I think one of the walker twins runs a warm weather camp in Tenerife might be worth a shot:

I've always wanted to do this running holiday:

I'd say it would be suitable for a solo traveller

Hi Skittles...did you find anything decent?
I was looking for something similar. Am torn between a long hike, maybe through the Alps, or a decent running spot with trails & a beach with a few around for a bit of a social scene...but not tied to a specific running group.
If you have any good info not mentioned by the other posters would you mind sharing?

Have to say this sounds like a dream holiday. A week by myself with no work and nothing to do but run and eat nice food....? Some day...

+1 to Club LaSanta, was there years ago and it's great.

If you're looking to hike, take a look at the tatras mountains in northern slovakia.

Does it have to be abroad? You could try something like running the Kerry Way here, though you might not stretch it out to a week of running. Could also have a day or 2 in the Reeks. Course weather is the unknown...

Hi guys first of all thanks for all the suggestions!! Must do some proper research on them Friday , I've no wifi connection at home (shock horror) and work is too busy to skive off searching hols on the work computer. Can't wait to see what's out there.

I know to some it might sound ideal going on a solo holiday in the sun but I'm a bit intimidated by it all. I'm quite shy so don't know how I'd fair doing it all on my own - sure give it a lash anyway I suppose.

Conor , I'm from Kerry so will be spending a few days down there before I head away anyway but thanks for the suggestion ;)

hey skittles, if it doesn't need to be running specific I'd recommend Venice for solo travel, I would have felt similarly to you but ended up there on my own last year and had a fab time, so much to see & do none of which requires company and some very nice parts of it to go running too. I can PM you the b & b I stayed in and would highly recommend.

Hey Firedance, that makes me feel much better knowing you went through something similar and had such a good time. Yes please , do pm me the details when you have a chance!

I was in Berlin last weekend, and I noticed a group of runners being brought around the sights on foot (running). Could be an interesting way of getting your easy miles done while visiting a city.

If you want to travel solo, and want a holiday that contains activity (but alas more hiking, cycling etc than running) then do have a glance at Exodus Travel. They have a range of holidays that combine culture and leisure.

A few years ago I travelled with Guerba Travel, the Adventure Company, and later with Exodus. (I went to places like Libya and Ethiopia, having a brilliant time with some really interesting types - from ex-army to ex-aid workers). Nowadays these companies all owned by an Australian company called Peak Travel but the basic formula is the same: some holidays are oriented towards the leisurely/cultural end of things, others more towards the healthy, younger (but not interested in/are beyond the beach sex sand) demographic. I've gotten to some places to which I could never have dragged an unwilling partner. Have a look - a bit more pricey than I remember, but perhaps that's the sterling-euro effect:

If you can speak French then definitely consider l'UCPA. I was living in Brussels about two decades ago and went on one of their holidays. Truly excellent though my French was of too poor a standard to really get to enjoy it. It'd appear that they've an English language website nowadays:
    http://www.ucpa.co.uk/
I was a smoker at the time, but so too was every French guy/gal, and it was something of a surprise to see just how high the levels of fitness were and what was expected in the 'mulitsport' holiday I joined. L'UCPA are cheaper too than many of the sporting holidays in Ireland and the UK, but still have high-quality coaches and trainers involved in their programmes.

There's no real need for a package type running holiday, all you need is a city with lots of parks(or easy access to the countryside). I found Munich (English Gardens and Nymphenburg Castle Gardens) and Amsterdam(Vondelpark, etc.) to be great for running. The only thing is to have the motivation to get up in the mornings and run (especially if you end up in the beer gardens for the rest of the day in Munich), but if you have a look you'll find meet-up running groups in a lot of cities.

I had a look at a few of the running tour guides but they seem to be very expensive and not really aimed at those who'd be running every day. Anyway, as long as you don't end up getting lost, running around the city centre before everyone else wakes up is a great way to find things to come back and explore later on in the day.

Solo travel is great. I did 10 weeks around South America on my own in 2010, and have done lots of solo trips since. What is so great about it is that you are never really alone at all. Hostels and adventure tours tend to have many solo travellers. It's so easy to meet people. I met way more people on my solo trips than I would when I went travelling with friends. Even when I had a girlfriend I still did some solo trips. There's nothing strange about it at all. It's probably the best way to travel as you can do what you want and not have to make compromises like you would if with a group of friends.

As for running. You can do that anywhere.
