Is it possible to retrofit a manual roller shutter door so it can be opened and.closed with a chain mechanism.

Don't see why not, depending on the clearances.

Has anyone retrofitted a motor to a manual door.

Yes it could be done depending on whether it's an internal motor or an external motor. But it might be as cheap just to buy a new Roller with the Motor fitted. Not the curtain just the Roller.
