I've been working at a part time job as a 17 year old over the last 4 weeks. I've got 240 euro in wages, but I've received just under half that, because im taxed at the higher rate &usc and all.

Ive stopped working there now, and I was just wondering what I have to do to claim back that tax, as surely thats not a normal level of tax to be paying. out of a pay packet of 181 euros, I was taxed to having only 95 left. My employer said something vague about bringing the company's ppsn to tallaght tax office. Could anyone clear this up for me?

It sounds as if you are on emergency tax. The emoloyer tellibg you to bring their ppsn to the tallaght revenue office would tie in with this.

You need to contact revenue and advise them you have started working, your details, name, address, ppsn and same fir your employer. Revenue have a standard form for this, form 12A (http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/it/forms/form12a.pdf)

Once revenue process this form they will issue your employer with a certificate of tax credits and standard rste cut off point. Until your employer gets this you are probably paying more tax than you otherwise would.

Revenue website gives a good explanation of how the system works.

    Thanks!
since I have stopped working with my employer, and wont be receiving more wages to claim tax credits, will I be able to claim these from the tax office itself?

You'll need your P45 to get overpaid tax back from revenue. And you'll need to wait at least a month (from the date that you left the job) before claiming it.
